Analysis on bainite transformation in reheated low-carbon bainite weld metals

A combination of laser scanning confocal microscopy (LSCM) and dilatometry was utilised to simultaneously qualitatively analyse the morphological evolution of bainite by examination of in situ observed micrographs and to quantitatively investigate the amount of bainite transformation by studying dilatometry data.

Diffusion in growth of bainite

Edgewise growth rates for Widmanstaetten ferrite and bainite in low alloy steels can be represented with an empirical equation showing proportionality to the square of the supersaturation of the austenite. The proportionality constant has a value in reasonable agreement with the assumption of rate control by carbon diffusion.
