Selenoprotein H Functions as a PPARα Coactivator to Link Selenium Homeostasis to Hepatic Lipid Metabolism and Protect against Steatohepatitis

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Our study identifies selenium deficiency as a hallmark of MASH pathogenesis. Dietary selenium supplementation enhances hepatic fatty acid oxidation (FAO) and attenuates MASH progression by activating the PPARα pathway via selenoprotein H (SELENOH). This selenium‐SELENOH‐PPARα nexus redefines the functional scope of selenoproteins, moving from redox ...

Two Methods of Monitoring Cats at a Landscape-Scale

open access: yesAnimals, 2021
Feral cats are difficult to manage and harder to monitor. We analysed the cost and the efficacy of monitoring the pre- and post-bait abundance of feral cats via camera-traps or track counts using four years of data from the Matuwa Indigenous Protected ...

Anticoagulant baiting for jackrabbit control [PDF]

open access: yes, 1978
The jackrabbit, Lepus californicus, is properly called a hare rather than a rabbit, because the young are born fully furred and with eyes open. Hares differ from rabbits in anatomy and in the lack of burrowing, although individual hares often have a more

Pan‐3D Genome Analysis Reveals the Roles of Structural Variation in Chicken Chromatin Architectures, Domestication and Production Traits

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study firstly presents a comprehensive and high‐resolution pan‐3D genome resource in chicken. Our findings reveal the role of structural variations in 3D genome architectures, and how they influence the domestication process and production traits at the 3D genome level.

Cameras and carcasses: historical and current methods for using artificial food falls to study deep-water animals [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
Deep-ocean animals remain poorly understood compared to their shallow-water relatives, mainly because of the great cost and difficulty involved in obtaining reliable ecological data.

The Maize ZmbHLH118 Transcription Factor Regulates Vacuolar Nitrate Loading by the NO3− Transporter ZmCLCa

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
In maize, the bHLH transcription factor ZmbHLH118 directly binds to the promoter of ZmCLCa and inhibits its expression. Tonoplast‐localized ZmCLCa mediates NO3− influx into the vacuole to regulate intracellular NO3− homeostasis, modulating nitrate uptake and metabolism, plant growth, and grain yield.

Reducing Baylisascaris procyonis Roundworm Larvae in Raccoon Latrines

open access: yesEmerging Infectious Diseases, 2011
Baylisascaris procyonis roundworms, a parasite of raccoons, can infect humans, sometimes fatally. Parasite eggs can remain viable in raccoon latrines for years. To develop a management technique for parasite eggs, we tested anthelmintic baiting.

Factive and nonfactive mental state attribution [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Factive mental states, such as knowing or being aware, can only link an agent to the truth; by contrast, nonfactive states, such as believing or thinking, can link an agent to either truths or falsehoods.

A NeuroD1 AAV‐Based Gene Therapy for Functional Brain Repair in Alzheimer's Disease‐Like Non‐Human Primate Model

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study tests NeuroD1 AAV‐based gene therapy in a non‐human primate Alzheimer's disease model. The therapy prevents neuronal damage, inhibits hippocampal atrophy, and reduces neuroinflammation. It also repairs vascular and blood‐brain barrier damage, restores cerebrospinal fluid biomarkers, enhances hippocampal glucose metabolism, and improves ...
