Human schistosomiasis is a parasitic disease caused by an infection with trematodes of the genus Schistosoma. The disease mainly affects impoverished populations. Around 800 million people are exposed to the infection, which is a public health problem in the tropical and subtropical regions of Africa, Asia, the Caribbean and South America.
