Stage‐Specific Indicators of Northern Yellowtail Rockfish (Sebastes flavidus) Recruitment in the California Current Ecosystem

open access: yesFisheries Oceanography, Volume 35, Issue 4, Page 630-649, July 2026.
ABSTRACT Oceanographic and ecological conditions can be used to inform forecasts and decision‐making for marine resources, but the dominant drivers of recruitment variability remain poorly understood for many fish stocks. We developed a conceptual life‐history model of the oceanographic and ecological variables that influence the recruitment of ...

Demographic trajectories of Baja California and California, 1900-2000. Contrasts and parallelisms

open access: yesEstudios Fronterizos, 2012
The purpose is to analyze migration processes that have occurred in two neighboring states, pointing out the characteristics acquired in each of them, especially regarding their origin and type of labor relations they have produced.

Niche Position Mediates the Effect of Polyploidy on Geographic Range Size in Clarkia

open access: yesJournal of Biogeography, Volume 53, Issue 7, July 2026.
ABSTRACT Aim Polyploidy has been proposed to result in greater geographic range size in plants because it increases the capacity for adaptation to novel environments; however, the proposed relationship is not found across clades. By contrast, the large genome constraint hypothesis predicts that larger genomes constrain the niche, leading to similar ...

Killer Whales in the Central Tropical Pacific: Occurrence, Resightings, Morphology, and Acoustics

open access: yesMarine Mammal Science, Volume 42, Issue 3, July 2026.
ABSTRACT Compared to their well‐studied coastal temperate counterparts, killer whales (Orcinus orca) in tropical‐subtropical and oceanic areas are under‐documented. We used sighting, photo‐identification, and acoustic data of killer whales in the central tropical Pacific (CTP), collected from multiple platforms between 2002 and 2023, to assess their ...

The underappreciated roles of fog and dew on vegetation and biocrusts

open access: yesNew Phytologist, Volume 251, Issue 1, Page 46-63, July 2026.
Summary Fog and dew represent minor components of ecosystem water budgets in most ecosystems. However, fog and dew can play an essential role in ecosystem dynamics and are particularly important for water‐limited systems. In addition to serving as direct water inputs, fog and dew can influence microclimate and water redistribution, thereby promoting ...

Phylogeny‐based generic delimitations of the diverse leafhopper tribe Gyponini, including the establishment of a new tribe of Iassinae (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae)

open access: yesSystematic Entomology, Volume 51, Issue 3, July‐September 2026.
Phylogenetic relationships among 97.6% of Gyponini genera and 97.4% of subgenera were inferred using morphological and multilocus molecular data. Analyses support the monophyly of Gyponini, transfer Hoplojassini to Hylicinae and establish Chilenanini trib. nov. within Iassinae.

Contextualizing Baja California

open access: yes, 2010
Early European explorers and missionaries who first set foot in Baja California described the peninsula as a harsh environment, lled with “savage” tribes of simplistic people (see Laylander 2000:96–100). these early explorers typically arrived in Baja California by way of Mesoamerica, and their views on the simplicity of the peninsular cultures were ...
