X-rays from a radio-loud compact BAL Quasar 1045+352 and the nature of outflows in radio-loud BAL Quasars

open access: yes, 2009
We present new results on X-ray properties of radio loud broad absorption line (BAL) quasars and focus on broad-band spectral properties of a high ionization BAL (HiBAL) compact steep spectrum (CSS) radio-loud quasar 1045+352.

Does the X-ray outflow quasar PDS 456 have a UV outflow at 0.3c? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
The quasar PDS 456 (at redshift ~0.184) has a prototype ultra-fast outflow (UFO) measured in X-rays. This outflow is highly ionized with relativistic speeds, large total column densities log N_H(cm^-2) > 23, and large kinetic energies that could be ...

Combined Process‐ and Phase‐Field‐Simulation to Predict the Microstructure of Single‐Crystal Ni‐Based Superalloys

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A combined finite element and phase‐field approach predicts the evolution of microstructure during the directional solidification of Ni‐based superalloys. The model reveals how withdrawal rate, temperature gradient, and wall thickness control the dendrite spacing, highlighting the strong effect of surface regions in thin sections where dendrite growth ...

A Chandra Survey of the X-ray Properties of Broad Absorption Line Radio-Loud Quasars

open access: yes, 2009
This work presents the results of a Chandra study of 21 broad absorption line (BAL) radio-loud quasars (RLQs). We conducted a Chandra snapshot survey of 12 bright BAL RLQs selected from SDSS/FIRST data and possessing a wide range of radio and CIV ...

Radio spectra and polarisation properties of a bright sample of Radio-Loud Broad Absorption Line Quasars [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
The origin of broad-absorption-line quasars (BAL QSOs) is still an open issue. Accounting for ~20% of the QSO population, these objects present broad absorption lines in their optical spectra generated from outflows with velocities up to 0.2c.

Surface Tension Measurement of Ti‐6Al‐4V by Falling Droplet Method in Oxygen‐Free Atmosphere

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
In this article, the temperature‐dependent surface tension of free falling, oscillating Ti‐6Al‐4V droplets is investigated in both argon and monosilane doped, oxygen‐free atmosphere. Droplet temperature and oscillation are captured with one single high‐speed camera, and the surface tension is calculated with Rayleigh's formula.

Cascaded Multilevel Structure With Three-Phase and Single-Phase H-Bridges for Open-End Winding Induction Motor Drive

open access: yesIEEE Open Journal of the Industrial Electronics Society, 2023
A new multilevel topology for an open-end winding motor drive is proposed in this article, presenting a similar structure to the cascaded H-bridge multilevel inverter.

Polarization of Quasars: Electron Scattering in the Broad Absorption Line Region

open access: yes, 2005
It is widely accepted that the broad absorption line region (BALR) exists in most (if not all) quasars with a small covering factor. Recent works showed that the BALR is optically thick to soft and even medium energy X-rays, with a typical hydrogen ...

Impact of Pre‐Oxidation Treatments on a Recycled MgO/Steel‐Composite as Carbon Free Anode in Aluminum‐Electrolysis Environments

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Cermets (60 vol.% AISI 316L stainless steel, 40 vol.% recycled MgO), intended for use in aluminum electrolysis, were pre‐oxidized in three furnaces with different heating technologies and subjected to a cryolite corrosion test. The different atmospheres influenced the formation of oxide layers, which in turn affected corrosion resistance and ...

A New PLV-Spatial Filtering to Improve the Classification Performance in BCI Systems

open access: yesIEEE Transactions on Neural Systems and Rehabilitation Engineering, 2022
Objective: The performance of an EEG-based brain-computer interface (BCI) system is highly dependent on signal preprocessing. This manuscript presents a filtering method to improve the feature classification algorithms typically used in BCI.
