Dynamic and Static Balancing Ability of Preschool Children

Journal of Motor Behavior, 1971
Performance differences in dynamic and static balance ability of 150 preschool Ss aged 3,4, and 5 yr. were studied. Ss performed 4 balance-beam tasks and 2 balance-board tasks. An Age by Sex (3 × 2) factorial, design employing both univariate and multivariate ANOVA techniques were the statistics used.

Review of tests of standing balance abilities

Brain Injury, 1989
This review examines tests of standing balance abilities in patients with traumatic brain injury. Patients may compensate for vestibular dysfunction by using other sensory systems. As a result, subtle deficits in balance abilities may not be detected by traditional tests.

Balancing the Costs and Benefits of Learning Ability

Advances in Artificial Life, ECAL 2013, 2013
We study the costs and benefits of plasticity by evolving agents in environments with different rates of environmental change. Evolution allows both hard-coded strategies and learned strategies, with learning rates varying throughout life. We observe a range of change rates where the balance of costs and benefits are just right for evolving learning ...

Multilevel inverter with the ability of self-voltage balancing

IEE Proceedings - Electric Power Applications, 2006
This paper proposes a new topology of multilevel inverter that can work in three operation modes: the single-direction-balance mode, the bidirection-balance mode and the nonbalance mode. Only a DC source is required in a single-phase new inverter that works in the single-direction-balance mode or the bidirection-balance mode.

The Effects of Abdominal Belt and Taping on Balance Ability

Journal of Clinical Movement Science in Human, 2017
Purpose The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of taping therapy and abdominal belt through the one leg standing on balance ability. The results can be used as basic value for studying of relative between balance ability and low back pain.

Using the Berg Balance Scale to Distinguish Balance Abilities in Children with Cerebral Palsy

Pediatric Physical Therapy, 2002
This study was designed to evaluate the use of the Berg Balance Scale (BBS) to assess the balance abilities of children with cerebral palsy.Thirty-six ambulatory children with cerebral palsy and 14 children with no motor impairment (ages eight to 12 years) were assessed on the BBS and the Gross Motor Function Measure (GMFM).

Dynamic Balance Abilities of Collegiate Men for the Bench Press

Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research, 2012
This study investigated the dynamic balance detection ability of college men for the bench press exercise. Thirty-five college men (mean ± SD: age = 22.4 ± 2.76 years, bench press experience = 8.3 ± 2.79 years, and estimated 1RM = 120.1 ± 21.8 kg) completed 1 repetition of the bench press repetitions for each of 3 bar loading arrangements.

Relationship of Dynamic Balance to Speed and to Ability in Swimming

Research Quarterly. American Association for Health, Physical Education and Recreation, 1957
Abstract High and significant r's were found between dynamic balance (as measured by the Bass Test) and speed in swimming (−.75 ± .05), and dynamic balance and ability in swimming (.65 ± .07). Also, t ratios calculated between these same abilities indicated that dynamic balance is not a chance factor and may be an important factor in speed and in ...

Retention of a Balance Skill as a Function of Initial Ability Level

Research Quarterly. American Association for Health, Physical Education and Recreation, 1970
Abstract To examine the hypothesis that there would be differential forgetting among subjects differing in initial ability level, 150 high school males were given 50 practice trials on a balance skill, the stabilometer. Layoff intervals of 1, 7, and 14 days were interpolated between trials 20 and 21, 30 and 31, and 40 and 41, respectively.

Quantitative measures of a robot’s physical ability to balance

The International Journal of Robotics Research, 2016
This paper presents quantitative measures of a robot’s physical ability to balance itself actively on a single point, line or area of support. These measures express the ratio of a change in the state of motion of the robot’s center of mass to the amount of action required at the actuated joints in order to produce that change.
