An engineering analysis of a closed cycle plant growth module [PDF]

open access: yes
The SOLGEM model is a numerical engineering model which solves the flow and energy balance equations for the air flowing through a growing environment, assuming quasi-steady state conditions within the system.

Cytoplasmic p21 promotes stemness of colon cancer cells via activation of the NFκB pathway

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Cytoplasmic p21 promotes colorectal cancer stem cell (CSC) features by destabilizing the NFκB–IκB complex, activating NFκB signaling, and upregulating BCL‐xL and COX2. In contrast to nuclear p21, cytoplasmic p21 enhances spheroid formation and stemness transcription factor CD133.

Modelling rice phenotypic plasticity in diverse climates using EcoMeristem: Model evolution and applications to rice improvement [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Climate change and variability (CCV) exposes tropical crops as rice to heat and drought. Increasing atmospheric CO2 is expected to improve plant transpiration efficiency but benefits may be more than offset by reduced transpirational cooling and ...

Methylation biomarkers can distinguish pleural mesothelioma from healthy pleura and other pleural pathologies

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
We developed and validated a DNA methylation–based biomarker panel to distinguish pleural mesothelioma from other pleural conditions. Using the IMPRESS technology, we translated this panel into a clinically applicable assay. The resulting two classifier models demonstrated excellent performance, achieving high AUC values and strong diagnostic accuracy.

Development of plant epidemiological surveillance networks, data exchanges and joint response strategies in the Caribbean: the french experience [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Plant pests and pathogens have the potential to emerge and spread rapidly, cause severe losses and threaten food security worldwide. Such a threat is increased by the rise of commercial exchanges of germplasm and fresh produce and by global warming. This

Strength through diversity: how cancers thrive when clones cooperate

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Intratumor heterogeneity can offer direct benefits to the tumor through cooperation between different clones. In this review, Kuiken et al. discuss existing evidence for clonal cooperativity to identify overarching principles, and highlight how novel technological developments could address remaining open questions.

Biosynthesis and multifaceted roles of reactive species in plant defense mechanisms during environmental cues

open access: yesPlant Stress
Reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive nitrogen species (RNS) are key components of plant metabolism, acting as cellular damage agents and essential signalling molecules.

Biogas from manure – a new technology to close the nutrient and energy circuit on-farm [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
The Biodynamic Research Institute in Järna developed a two-phase on-farm biogas plant. The plant digests manure of dairy cattle and organic residues originating from the farm and the surrounding food processing units containing 17.7-19.6 % total solids ...

Effects of plant- and animal-based-protein meals for a day on serum nitric oxide and peroxynitrite levels in healthy young men

open access: yesEndocrine Journal
Plant-based diets that replace animal-based proteins with plant-based proteins have received increased attention for cardiovascular protection. Nitric oxide (NO) plays an essential role in the maintenance of endothelial function.
