Surgical management of an open humeral fracture in a greater rhea (Rhea americana): Internal placement of a locking compression plate and post‐operative complications

open access: yesVeterinary Record Case Reports, Volume 14, Issue 2, May 2026.
SUMMARY A 17‐year‐old, 24‐kg, female greater rhea (Rhea americana) presented with an acute onset of left wing droop. Clinical examination and radiographs revealed an open, simple, displaced, short‐oblique diaphyseal fracture of the distal third of the left humerus.

The value of native bird conservation: A New Zealand case study [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
During December 2007 and January 2008, telephone surveys were used to randomly sample Waikato, New Zealand residents. The purpose of the surveys was to determine whether respondents valued native bird conservation programmes in their area.

Photobiomodulation With 976 nm Diode Laser Enhances Osteoblastic Differentiation of Saos‐2 Cells Cultured on Collagen Membranes

open access: yesClinical and Experimental Dental Research, Volume 12, Issue 2, April 2026.
ABSTRACT Objective Laser photobiomodulation (PBM) influences cellular proliferation, morphology, and differentiation. Collagen membranes provide a bioactive scaffold that supports osteoblastic behavior; however, the effects of PBM on preosteoblastic Saos‐2 cells cultured on these membranes remain unclear.

Natality and calf mortality of the Northern Alaska Peninsula and Southern Alaska Peninsula caribou herds

open access: yesRangifer, 2003
We studied natality in the Northern Alaska Peninsula (NAP) and Southern Alaska Peninsula (SAP) caribou (Rangifer tarandus granti) herds during 1996-1999, and mortality and weights of calves during 1998 and 1999- Natality was lower in the NAP than the SAP

Count trends for migratory Bald Eagles reveal differences between two populations at a spring site along the Lake Ontario shoreline [PDF]

open access: yesPeerJ, 2016
The recovery of Bald Eagles (Haliaeetus leucophalus), after DDT and other organochlorine insecticides were banned in the United States, can be regarded as one of the most iconic success stories resulting from the Endangered Species Act.

Sedimentary Metagenomics Reveal Avian Community Transitions From the Last Glacial Maximum to the Holocene

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 4, April 2026.
We used sedimentary ancient DNA shotgun metagenomics to reconstruct past bird communities in northern high‐latitude environments. By using long time series and data collected across a large environmental gradient, we contributed in a unique and explorative way to the understanding of palaeoecological dynamics between birds and their habitat on the ...

The first whole genome and transcriptome of the cinereous vulture reveals adaptation in the gastric and immune defense systems and possible convergent evolution between the Old and New World vultures [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Background: The cinereous vulture, Aegypius monachus, is the largest bird of prey and plays a key role in the ecosystem by removing carcasses, thus preventing the spread of diseases. Its feeding habits force it to cope with constant exposure to pathogens,

Design and Application of a Genome‐Wide SNP Array to Improve Conservation Outcomes in the Critically Endangered Southern Corroboree Frog

open access: yesMolecular Ecology Resources, Volume 26, Issue 3, April 2026.
ABSTRACT Species‐specific genomic information has the potential to transform modern conservation management strategies through improved genomic assessment and management outcomes. Gaining genomic insights into genetic diversity, adaptability and potential resilience against infectious diseases is essential to enhance conservation efforts for threatened

The effects of spatiotemporal variation in marine resources on the occupancy dynamics of a terrestrial avian predator

open access: yesEcosphere
Identifying how species respond to system drivers such as weather, climate, habitat, and resource availability is critical for understanding population change.
