Surgical management of an open humeral fracture in a greater rhea (Rhea americana): Internal placement of a locking compression plate and post‐operative complications

open access: yesVeterinary Record Case Reports, Volume 14, Issue 2, May 2026.
SUMMARY A 17‐year‐old, 24‐kg, female greater rhea (Rhea americana) presented with an acute onset of left wing droop. Clinical examination and radiographs revealed an open, simple, displaced, short‐oblique diaphyseal fracture of the distal third of the left humerus.

Load Frequency Control in Two-Area Multi-Source Power System Using Bald Eagle-Sparrow Search Optimization Tuned PID Controller

open access: yesEnergies, 2023
For power system engineers, automated load frequency control (LFC) for multi-area power networks has proven a difficult problem. With the addition of numerous power generation sources, the complexity of these duties becomes even more difficult.

Environmental Impacts of Mountain Biking: Science Review and Best Practices [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
Mountain biking is still a relatively new activity whose environmental impact and contribution to trail degradation is poorly understood. As with all recreational pursuits, it is clear that mountain biking contributes some degree of environmental ...

Sedimentary Metagenomics Reveal Avian Community Transitions From the Last Glacial Maximum to the Holocene

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 4, April 2026.
We used sedimentary ancient DNA shotgun metagenomics to reconstruct past bird communities in northern high‐latitude environments. By using long time series and data collected across a large environmental gradient, we contributed in a unique and explorative way to the understanding of palaeoecological dynamics between birds and their habitat on the ...

Design and Application of a Genome‐Wide SNP Array to Improve Conservation Outcomes in the Critically Endangered Southern Corroboree Frog

open access: yesMolecular Ecology Resources, Volume 26, Issue 3, April 2026.
ABSTRACT Species‐specific genomic information has the potential to transform modern conservation management strategies through improved genomic assessment and management outcomes. Gaining genomic insights into genetic diversity, adaptability and potential resilience against infectious diseases is essential to enhance conservation efforts for threatened

Hierarchy-based Image Embeddings for Semantic Image Retrieval

open access: yes, 2019
Deep neural networks trained for classification have been found to learn powerful image representations, which are also often used for other tasks such as comparing images w.r.t. their visual similarity. However, visual similarity does not imply semantic

Temperature‐Related Changes in Avian Nestling Provisioning: A Global Analysis

open access: yesGlobal Change Biology, Volume 32, Issue 4, April 2026.
Using a global meta‐analysis, we examined how ambient temperature influences nestling provisioning rates in birds. We synthesised effect sizes from published studies that accounted for key ecological covariates and tested whether species traits and breeding context explained differences in temperature sensitivity.

Movement Models to Predict Low‐Altitude Flight of Soaring Birds Using Look‐Ahead Environmental Factors

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 3, March 2026.
Eagles see ahead. Now our model does too. By modeling how eagles respond to terrain and wind conditions in their line of sight, we can predict where they'll fly in the next 3 min with 3× better accuracy than current methods—protecting eagles while maximizing energy production.

The Birds of the Highlands of South-West Saudi Arabia and adjacent parts of the Tihama: July 2010 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
The objective of the survey was to compare habitats and bird life in the Asir region, particularly Jebal Souda and the Raydah escarpment protected area of the Saudi Wildlife Commission, and adjacent regions of the tihama, with those observed in July 1987
