The Development of a Triple Ball Bar System for Calibration of CNC Machine Tools

Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part B: Journal of Engineering Manufacture, 2006
The accuracy of machine tools restricts the dimensional accuracy of parts processed thereon. It is, therefore, necessary to monitor the errors of machine tools constantly. Normally, it takes a long set-up time before one can observe the machine tool and monitor its errors. The cost of such delays is inevitably high.

Properties of free-standing ball bar systems

Precision Engineering, 1993
Abstract This article offers recommendations to coordinate-measuring machine (CMM) buyers, sellers, and users on the design of free-standing ball bar systems used to evaluate the volumetric performance of CMMs according to the ANSI/ASME B89.1.12M standard. These systems are more widely used today than earlier methods such as magnetic ball bars.

Application of Ball Bar System and Genetic Algorithms for CNC Lathe Contouring Compensation

The International Journal of Advanced Manufacturing Technology, 2001
There is considerable interest in the development and improvement of contouring test devices for CNC machines. When ball bar systems are employed to test CNC lathes, the eccentricity cannot be determined accurately from the sampled quadrant contouring data via the least-squares method.
