RECONSTRUCTION OF BALL-ANDSOCKET JOINTS
Journal of the American Medical Association, 1912Having succeeded in reconstructing a tuberculous hip-joint so as to eliminate the disease and produce a new and apparently serviceable head on the femur, I desire to make a preliminary report on the operation and submit one case, which has demonstrated the feasibility of the procedure, with comments on others still under treatment.

The invention relates to a ball joint (10), comprising a joint housing (12), a bearing shell (14) received in the joint housing (12) and a ball pin (16) having a ball head (18) that is pivotably arranged in the bearing shell (14). The ball head (18) is substantially preloaded in the direction of a longitudinal axis (A) of the ball pin (16) by means of ...

Ten feet in eight children with ball-and-socket ankle joint (BSA-J) are reported with discussion of associated anomalies, kinematic analysis of the hindfoot motion, and talocalcaneal malalignment in the apparent valgus deformities. BSA-J is considered to be a common congenital condition associated with other anomalies in the foot or lower extremities ...

Abstract Ball joints made from carburized En 353 (BS970:815A16) steel failed after several hours of being fitted into vehicles. The parts were forged, machined, and thread rolled. The threads were copper plated to prevent carburization. The heat treatment consisted of carburizing in a cyanide bath for 12 hours at 930 deg C.

Theoretical model of ball joint squeak
Journal of Sound and Vibration, 2011Abstract The theoretical model for the ball joint squeak problem is proposed. The ball joint is modeled as a sphere attached to a rotating flexible beam and it is in contact with a semi-spherical rigid socket. The relative rotation and vibration between the ball and socket produces friction stresses causing the dynamic instability of the system.

Congenital and Acquired Ball-and-Socket Ankle Joint
Radiology, 1965Ball-and-socket ankle joint is the term applied when the talus shows a domed top in both the anteroposterior and lateral views and is shaped in a reciprocal manner with the concave distal end of the tibia. The fibula may or may not participate in the ball-and-socket ankle, depending upon whether or not it is a part of the joint.
