Ballast water sediment elemental analysis
Marine Pollution Bulletin, 2016Sediment samples from the ballast water tanks of ships calling at the port of Rijeka in the Northern Adriatic were analysed using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and secondary ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS) using caesium, argon and oxygen ion beams.

Macroalgal survival in ballast water tanks
Marine Pollution Bulletin, 2007Despite a large amount of research into invasive species and their introductions, there have been no studies focused on macroalgal transport in ballast water. To address this, we collected replicate samples of ballast water from 12 ships in two Mediterranean harbours (Naples and Salerno).

Commercial vessels are built for the transport of various cargoes or passengers. When a vessel is not fully laden, additional weight is required to provide for the vessel’s seaworthiness, e.g. to compensate for the increased buoyancy which can result in the lack of propeller immersion, inadequate transversal and longitudinal inclination, and other ...

Sterilization of Ships’ Ballast Water
2013In this chapter, applied research on microbubble dynamics induced by shock waves is presented for the sterilization treatment of marine bacteria contained in ships’ ballast water. Destruction of the marine ecosystem caused by sea creatures carried in ships’ ballast water to different seas is a serious global issue in the field of maritime sciences ...

The project aims to be mentioned in detail the controversial issue of ballast water management through International Convention of Ballast Water issued by the IMO. Varied investigations have been carried out regarding the risks ballast water veils for marine ecosystems especially in such a critical period for the planet where the climate changes are ...
