Fiddler Crabs (Crustacea: Decapoda: Ocypodidae) From Coastal Ecuador and the Galápagos Islands: Species Descriptions and DNA Barcodes

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 15, Issue 1, January 2025.
Twenty‐five taxa were collected during the surveys, while two more were noted from the literature and museum collections; five are new to Ecuador. DNA sequences for cytochrome c oxidase–subunit 1 were obtained for 27 operational taxonomic units with three morphologically indistinguishable cryptic or pseudo‐cryptic taxa were also revealed.

Reproductive Biology and Gross Biochemical Composition of Larkinia grandis (Bivalvia: Arcidae) in the Northwestern of the Mexican Pacific

open access: yesInternational Journal of Zoology, Volume 2025, Issue 1, 2025.
The reproductive cycle of Larkinia grandis (Broderip and G.B. Sowerby I, 1829) from the NW Mexican Pacific was analyzed in relation to environmental variables, condition index (CI), and biochemical composition of different tissues. A total of 960 clams (80/month; 44.5–142.0 mm, shell height) were collected from the El Cohui estuary in the Navachiste ...

Global conservation genomics of blue whales calls into question subspecies taxonomy and refines knowledge of population structure

open access: yesAnimal Conservation, Volume 27, Issue 5, Page 626-638, October 2024.
Blue whales are the largest living animal and became endangered due to whaling. We found three major groupings of blue whales using high‐resolution population genomics: the eastern Pacific, Indo‐western Pacific, and Antarctic blue whales. Within these groupings, there was divergence between the eastern North and eastern South Pacific; between the ...
