Thermal Model for Ballistic Impact Flashes

52nd AIAA/ASME/ASCE/AHS/ASC Structures, Structural Dynamics and Materials Conference, 2011
The development of fire protection and vulnerability codes is of great interest to the aircraft vehicle survivability community and allows the assessment of potential threats on current and future platforms. However, these codes currently lack a physics-based model for determining the thermal properties and heat released by a ballistically-induced ...

Ballistic impact performance of metallic targets

Materials & Design, 2012
Abstract Performance of metallic targets under ballistic impact loading is presented. The entire ballistic impact event considering target performance can be divided into dynamic plastic penetration, spherical bulge formation, bulge advancement, plug formation and exit and projectile exit. Velocity, displacement, force, deceleration of the projectile

Ballistic impact performance of composite targets

Materials & Design, 2013
Ballistic impact performance of structures made of polymer matrix composites is presented. During the ballistic impact event, the energy lost by the projectile is absorbed by the composite target through various energy absorbing mechanisms. Compression of the target directly below the projectile, compression in the region surrounding the impacted zone,

Crack behavior of ballistically impacted ceramic

AIP Conference Proceedings, 2000
A hot isostatically pressed (HIP) assembly of titanium alloy encapsulated AD995 ceramic, subjected to ballistic impact, is studied in detail. The crack behavior of ceramic confined in this way is studied in a combined experimental and computational effort. Fabrication of the HIP assembly is described.

Ballistic Impact Testing of Composite Structures

Earth & Space 2006, 2006
This article deals with techniques which have been developed to study the behavior of composite materials and structures under high speed ballistic impact conditions at the NASA Glenn Research Center (GRC) Ballistic Impact Facility. The techniques include launching systems, fixture methods, imaging systems and instrumentation systems.

Polybenzoxazine Composites for Ballistic Impact Applications

2013
This chapter discusses the utilization of polybenzoxazine/urethane alloys with fine-tuning properties for ballistic impact composite application. The ballistic impact study of KevlarTM fiber-reinforced polybenzoxazine alloys under the test weapon with standard 124 grains round lead projectile and a copper outer coating (Full Metal Jacket) typically ...

MEASURING MECHNOLUMINESCENCE GENERATED DURING BALLISTIC IMPACTS

AIP Conference Proceedings, 2009
In 1888, Wiedemann published the first paper where luminescence is defined as the emission of electromagnetic radiation in excess of thermal radiation. This radiation is usually in the visible portion of the electromagnetic spectrum. Since the same basic processes may yield infrared or ultraviolet radiation, such emission in excess of thermal radiation
