Perforating characters of Zr-based bulk metallic glass fragment against thin steel target

open access: yesAIP Advances
To investigate the perforating characteristics of Zr-based bulk metallic glass fragments against thin steel target, ballistic experiments were carried out to measure ballistic the limit velocities of fragments perforating against different thicknesses of

Tuning the Morphology of Self‐Assembled Nanopatterns on MgO(001) Surfaces by Sequential Broad‐Beam Ion Irradiation

open access: yesphysica status solidi (RRL) – Rapid Research Letters, EarlyView.
A two‐step approach based on broad‐beam ion irradiation is demonstrated to produce fine‐tuned self‐assembled surface patterns on MgO(001). It shows an efficient route to modifying the crystalline MgO(001) surface topography in a controlled way, making use of its very specific behavior in terms of both the pattern morphology and patterning dynamics.

Subterranean Mine Inspection Using the Prometheus Re‐Configurable Drone

open access: yesJournal of Field Robotics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This paper describes the design, development, and real‐world testing of an autonomous drone for subterranean exploration, known as “Prometheus.” Driven by requirements from industry that the drone be able to be deployed through areas of restricted access, Prometheus was designed to be directly deployed through a 150 mm aperture.

Effects of Different Projectile Nose Shapes on the Impact Performance of the Aluminium 2024 Thin Plate

open access: yesPolytechnic Journal
In this study, the impact performance of the Al2024 thin plate target was determined through a numerical approach. Two different-nosed hard steel projectiles, including a blunt and a sphere, were used in order to obtain the ballistic impact of the target.

Sampling, Mobility, and Anchoring in Small‐Body Sampling Robots: A Comprehensive Review

open access: yesSmartBot, EarlyView.
Small‐body sampling robots are exploration systems that perform contact, sampling, and stable operations on microgravity bodies such as asteroids and comets. The authors review representative robot architectures and key technologies, focusing on the mechanisms, evolution, and coupling of sampling, mobility, and anchoring.

When does category spanning hurt or help producers?

open access: yesStrategic Management Journal, EarlyView.
Abstract Research Summary Scholars have theorized many factors shaping whether category spanning helps or hurts producers. We first synthesize evidence by meta‐analyzing 25 years of empirical research, which reveals a null effect of spanning on average, yet with significant subsample heterogeneity. To unpack it, we theorize and find that spanning hurts

Strategy for One‐Step Optimization of Metal Oxide Passivating Contact Materials for Si Heterojunction Solar Cells through Growth Angle Variation

open access: yesSmall, EarlyView.
A one‐step oblique angle reactive sputtering approach enables simultaneous tuning of bulk and interfacial stoichiometry in a metal oxide/ silicon heterojunction. In case of vanadium oxides, growth angle variation controls the formation of stoichiometric SiO2, ternary SiOx(V) interlayer, and phase purity of vanadium oxide, considerably simplifying the ...

Controlled Formation of Carbon Nanotubes and Nanotube Junctions from Bilayer Graphene

open access: yesSmall, EarlyView.
Twisted bilayer graphene is cut using a scanning transmission electron microscope to create individual chiral carbon nanotubes and interconnected nanotube junctions. The sculpting is facilitated by in situ heating and automated beam control. Bilayer graphene ribbons with a width of less than approximately 4 nm spontaneously convert to CNTs, while no ...
