Deep‐Tissue Light Generation via Whispering Gallery Mode Lasing From a Commercial Nylon Fiber for Biomedical Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
A dyed nylon fiber is implemented inside the scattering phantom and skin tissue. The deep‐tissue light generation via whispering gallery mode lasing is demonstrated, achieving a depth of >50 times transport mean free path in scattering phantom and 3 mm beneath skin.

A statistical approach to proof testing [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Police body armour has undergone rapid evolution, and this is due in part to a relatively simple type approval process which matches relatively small numbers purchased by individual police forces.

The failure of a tungsten carbide-cobalt cored projectile penetrating a hard target [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Experimental results are presented from an investigation of the parameters of a ceramic-faced armour system that are required to induce damage in a tungsten carbide - cobalt (WC-Co) penetrator.

Bismuth Nanogratings With Narrow Plasmon Resonances for Dynamic Polarized Color Generation and Colorimetric Sensing

open access: yesAdvanced Optical Materials, EarlyView.
Bismuth nanogratings are fabricated by pulsed laser deposition onto the nanostructured silver and polycarbonate surfaces of DVDs. They display spectrally‐narrow plasmon resonances yielding vivid colors, which are strongly sensitive to the polarization of light, angle of incidence, nature of the underlying surface and of the surrounding medium (air or ...

Ballistic performance of lightweight ceramic-metal composite armour plates under blunt projectile impact

open access: yesComposites Part C: Open Access
The importance of well-designed armour for mitigating threat to life cannot be overemphasized. Possibility of single and multi-layered configurations, various potential materials and their sequence and the gap in between makes the design of effective ...

Flexoelectricity in Photoconversion: Fundamentals, Materials, and Outlooks

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Mechanical bending of a flexible cantilever induces a strain gradient in the photoactive material. The resulting flexoelectric field couples with photovoltaic and photoconductive effects, modulating charge generation, separation, and collection. A comparative analysis of oxide perovskites, halide perovskites, and two‐dimensional materials is presented,

A facile method for the estimation of ceramic performance in light armor systems

open access: yesInternational Journal of Ceramic Engineering & Science
Ballistic armor material development has been historically constrained by the limitations of existing predictive models. Traditional approaches, primarily reliant on finite element models, are not only computationally intensive but also often fall short ...

Efficient Hot Carrier Management in Lead Halide Perovskite Micro‐Disks Revealed by Super‐Diffusive Migration

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Hot‐carrier transport in metal halide perovskites is investigated using spatiotemporally‐resolved photoluminescence microscopy. Mesa‐shaped MAPbBr3 microdisks exhibit anomalous super‐diffusive carrier propagation on nanosecond timescales, driven by hot‐carrier stabilization and strong carrier–phonon coupling.
