Helmeted hornbill cranial kinesis: Balancing mobility and stability in a high‐impact joint

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, Volume 309, Issue 5, Page 1299-1312, May 2026.
Abstract Prokinesis—in which a craniofacial joint allows the rostrum to move relative to the braincase—is thought to confer diverse advantages in birds, mostly for feeding. A craniofacial joint would, however, be a weak link if cranial stability is important. Paradoxically, we have identified a craniofacial joint in helmeted hornbills (Rhinoplax vigil),

Mechanical Properties and Ballistic Performance for Different Coatings on HARDOX 450 Steel for Defense Applications

open access: yesCrystals
The aim of the current study is to investigate the mechanical properties and ballistic performance of HARDOX 450 steel for defense applications in different conditions: uncoated, alumina-coated, and LINE X polyurea-coated.

Influence of the vacuum resin process, on the ballistic behaviour of lightweight armouring solutions

open access: yesEPJ Web of Conferences, 2012
The armour of vehicles against conventional threats is mainly composed with steel or aluminium panels. Efficient heavy solutions exist, but the involved industries require new lightweight structures.

Twitching Motility of Bacteria with Type IV Pili: Fractal Walks, First passage time and their Consequences on Microcolonies

open access: yes, 2017
A human pathogen, \textit{Neisseria gonorrhoeae} (NG), moves on surfaces by attaching and retracting polymeric structures called Type IV pili. The \textit{tug-of-war} between the pili results in a two-dimensional stochastic motion called \textit ...

Experimental study of sandwich structures as armour against medium-velocity impacts [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
An experimental impact study has been conducted on sandwich structures to identify and improve armour solutions for aeronautical applications. The objectives are to find the best configurations, i.e. the non-perforated targets with the minimal weight and

Scalable Thermal Engineering via Femtosecond Laser‐Direct‐Written Phononic Nanostructures

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, Volume 36, Issue 27, 2 April 2026.
This study demonstrates that femtosecond laser‐induced periodic surface structures (fs‐LIPSS) can function as phononic metasurfaces, reducing thermal conductivity below the plain thin‐film limit. Phonon Monte Carlo analysis reveals that the periodic structures restrict phonon mean free paths.

Muscle Weakness and the Irisin–BDNF and Oxidative Stress Axis in the 60‐Day Pseudorandomised Controlled AGBRESA Bed Rest Study

open access: yesJournal of Cachexia, Sarcopenia and Muscle, Volume 17, Issue 2, April 2026.
ABSTRACT Background Muscle atrophy and weakness are among the most detrimental consequences of disuse, microgravity, hospitalisation and ageing. Oxidative modifications of myofibrillar proteins generated by oxidative stress may contribute to the reduced force‐ and power‐generating capacity of skeletal muscles. As part of the 60‐day AGBRESA bed rest (BR)

Ballistic comparison between epoxy-ramie and epoxy-aramid composites in Multilayered Armor Systems

open access: yesJournal of Materials Research and Technology, 2018
The ballistic protection against high-energy projectiles, such as the 7.62 mm, is more efficiently performed by means of multilayered armor systems (MAS).
