Development of Composite Structures for Ballistic Protection

Materials Science Forum, 2007
The mechanical behaviour and ballistic performance of carbon, glass (E and S type), aramide and polyethylene fabric reinforced composites with different epoxy resins were studied. The specimens −produced by hand lay-up method− were qualified by low velocity (Charpy and drop weight tests) and high velocity (two different bores ballistic) impact tests ...

Materials for protection from ballistic injury

Fibre Chemistry, 1996
It was noted that stiff-chain (para-aramid) and flexible chain (polyethylene) high-strength, high-modulus polymer fibres have been successfully used for ballistic protection of humans. It was hypothesized that new high-strength, high-modulus fibres based on aromatic polyesters could be successfully used for this purpose in the very near future.

BALLISTIC PROTECTIVE BUOYANT MATERIALS

1961
Abstract : Unbonded staple-fiber batts were observed as impeding projectile penetration by causing it to tumble as well as increasing its effective size by wadding. Batts prepared from steel staple fibers were ineffective as ballistic armor. High-tensile wire screen in conjunction with an Orlon staple fiber batt increases the protective ability of the ...

Thermal protection of ballistic entry vehicles

Journal of Spacecraft and Rockets, 1965
The concepts of radiation cooling and ablation cooling using char-forming plastic materials are examined for the purpose of providing thermal protection for ballistic vehicles entering the earth's atmosphere from near earth orbits. The effect on thermal protection requirements of re-entry from various orbit altitudes is presented.

The Impact of Aging on the Quality of Ballistic Protection

Science & Military
Ballistic protective materials degrade over time due to environmental exposure, mechanical stress, and natural aging of fibers. While manufacturers specify a limited service life for soft body armor, its actual long-term performance remains insufficiently explored. This study examines the effects of prolonged aging on ballistic resistance by evaluating

High performance textiles for ballistic protection

2011 Defense Science Research Conference and Expo (DSR), 2011
The protective textiles market is growing due to increasingly rigorous requirements for human safety, rising liability concerns and the need for higher levels of clothing performance. This study provides comprehensive analysis of fibres, materials and manufacturing methods used to make protective textiles for use in ballistic protection and safety ...

Blast-Ballistic Protection Research and Development

2012
Abstract : The primary emphasis of the research effort was on mitigating the threats associated with blast loading on occupied structures. Within the general area of blast effects research the report addresses two primary areas of concentration.
