A New Anthropomorphic Mannequin for Efficacy Evaluation of Thoracic Protective Equipment Against Blast Threats

open access: yesFrontiers in Bioengineering and Biotechnology, 2022
Exposure to blast is one of the major causes of death and disability in recent military conflicts. Therefore, it is crucial to evaluate the protective capability of the ballistic-proof equipment worn by soldiers against the effects of blast overpressure (

Balancing ballistic protection against physiological strain: Evidence from laboratory and field trials [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
This project was based on the premise that decisions concerning the ballistic protection provided to defence personnel should derive from an evaluation of the balance between protection level and its impact on physiological function, mobility, and ...

Synergistic approach of asteroid exploitation and planetary protection [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
The asteroid and cometary impact hazard has long been recognised as an important issue requiring risk assessment and contingency planning. At the same time asteroids have also been acknowledged as possible sources of raw materials for future large-scale ...

Smart Denture with Embedded Thin‐Film Temperature Sensors Patterned by Femtosecond Laser Pulse for Elderly Healthcare

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, Volume 7, Issue 3, March 2025.
We demonstrate the direct‐laser patterning of a gold thin film on polymethyl methacrylate to fabricate a temperature sensor for dentures. The temperature sensor‐embedded smart dentures are evaluated in an oral environment, enabling in‐situ monitoring for elderly healthcare.

A Thoracic Mechanism of Mild Traumatic Brain Injury Due to Blast Pressure Waves [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
The mechanisms by which blast pressure waves cause mild to moderate traumatic brain injury (mTBI) are an open question. Possibilities include acceleration of the head, direct passage of the blast wave via the cranium, and propagation of the blast wave to

Spin Transport in Thin Copper Channels Fabricated via Thermal Scanning Probe Lithography

open access: yesAdvanced Physics Research, EarlyView.
Thermal scanning probe lithography (t‐SPL) is demonstrated as an alternative to electron‐beam lithography for fabricating all‐metallic non‐local spin valves with ∼100 nm features. Devices exhibit strong spin signals and clean magnetic switching, demonstrating the viability of t‐SPL for nanoscale spintronics.

Natural fiber reinforced polymer composites for ballistic protection: Design, performance, and challenges

open access: yesResults in Materials
The increasing demand for sustainable and lightweight materials in defense and security applications has driven the development of natural fiber-reinforced polymer composites (NFRPCs) for ballistic protection.

Computational fluid dynamics simulations of airflow through the nasal passages of rhinolophoid bats

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract The nasal passages of bats that emit their echolocation call through their nostrils have adapted for sound emission as well as standard respiratory and olfactory functions. Rhinolophids, hipposiderids and rhinonycterids all use a high duty cycle (HDC) echolocation strategy.

Stretch‐shortening cycle force–time and power–time waveform analysis indicates limitations of the contralateral limb benchmark in athletes with ACL injury

open access: yesKnee Surgery, Sports Traumatology, Arthroscopy, EarlyView.
Abstract Purpose Unilateral countermovement jump (CMJsingle) testing is commonly used after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) to assess stretch‐shortening cycle (SSC) function and return‐to‐sport readiness. However, the impact of ACLR on contralateral limb SSC function is poorly understood, which may impact the utility of the ...

Detection of previous knee injuries using lower limb‐worn inertial measurement units: A cross‐sectional machine‐learning study

open access: yesKnee Surgery, Sports Traumatology, Arthroscopy, EarlyView.
Abstract Purpose Previous knee injury increases the risk of subsequent injury, even after functional recovery, yet residual gait, running or load alterations often go undetected in routine assessment. Wearable inertial measurement units (IMUs) may enable scalable detection of such alterations outside laboratory settings.
