Failure and impact behavior of facade panels made of glass fiber reinforced cement(GRC) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
GRC is a cementitious composite material made up of a cement mortar matrix and chopped glass fibers. Due to its outstanding mechanical properties, GRC has been widely used to produce cladding panels and some civil engineering elements.

Smart Denture with Embedded Thin‐Film Temperature Sensors Patterned by Femtosecond Laser Pulse for Elderly Healthcare

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, Volume 7, Issue 3, March 2025.
We demonstrate the direct‐laser patterning of a gold thin film on polymethyl methacrylate to fabricate a temperature sensor for dentures. The temperature sensor‐embedded smart dentures are evaluated in an oral environment, enabling in‐situ monitoring for elderly healthcare.

Investigation of the mechanical and ballistic properties of hybrid carbon/ aramid woven laminates

open access: yesDefence Technology, 2022
High-performance ballistic fibers, such as aramid fiber and ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE), are commonly used in anti-ballistic structures due to their low density, high tensile strength and high specific modulus.

A Thoracic Mechanism of Mild Traumatic Brain Injury Due to Blast Pressure Waves [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
The mechanisms by which blast pressure waves cause mild to moderate traumatic brain injury (mTBI) are an open question. Possibilities include acceleration of the head, direct passage of the blast wave via the cranium, and propagation of the blast wave to

Crater Observing Bioinspired Rolling Articulator (COBRA)

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, EarlyView.
Crater Observing Bio‐inspired Rolling Articulator (COBRA) is a modular, snake‐inspired robot that addresses the mobility challenges of extraterrestrial exploration sites such as Shackleton Crater. Incorporating snake‐like gaits and tumbling locomotion, COBRA navigates both uneven surfaces and steep crater walls.

Phase Separation of Nucleic Acids: Mechanisms, Properties, and Applications

open access: yesAngewandte Chemie International Edition, EarlyView.
Recent discoveries have shown that single‐stranded long‐chain nucleic acids can undergo temperature‐induced phase separation, enabling formation of micrometer‐sized condensates. This Minireview discusses the current mechanistic understanding of this phenomenon, highlights strategies for controlling the physical and chemical properties of these ...

Helmeted hornbill cranial kinesis: Balancing mobility and stability in a high‐impact joint

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Prokinesis—in which a craniofacial joint allows the rostrum to move relative to the braincase—is thought to confer diverse advantages in birds, mostly for feeding. A craniofacial joint would, however, be a weak link if cranial stability is important. Paradoxically, we have identified a craniofacial joint in helmeted hornbills (Rhinoplax vigil),

Ballistic design and testing of a composite armour reinforced by CNTs suitable for armoured vehicles

open access: yesDefence Technology
This paper is investigating the use of composite armour reinforced by nanomaterials, for the protection of light armoured (LAV) and medium armoured military vehicles (MAV), and the interaction between the composite materials and high-performance ...
