Light‐Harvesting Photothermal Hotspots Enabled by NIR Scattering‐Absorption Coupling

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
By coupling the broadband scattering of nanodiamonds with the plasmonic absorption of gold nanostars, this work proposes a novel strategy for the active modulation of photon transport. This strategy creates localized photothermal hotspots in turbid media and achieves a supra‐additive heating efficiency, thereby providing a universal platform for low ...

The critical events for motor-sensory temporal recalibration [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Determining if we, or another agent, were responsible for a sensory event can require an accurate sense of timing. Our sense of appropriate timing relationships must, however, be malleable as there is a variable delay between the physical timing of an ...

Light‑Driven Propulsion of Graphene Aerogels in Microgravity

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Ultralight graphene aerogels convert laser light into thrust. Parabolic‐flight experiments directly compare their motion in microgravity and at 1 g, revealing order‐of‐magnitude enhancements in distance, velocity, and transient thrust when weight and friction are removed (∼50 times enhancement).

An investigation on anti-impact and penetration performance of basalt fiber composites with different weave and lay-up modes

open access: yesDefence Technology, 2020
The woven basalt fiber composites (WBFC) and the unidirectional [0°/90°/45°/-45°]s basalt fiber composites (UBFC) were prepared by hot-pressing. Three-point bending test, low velocity impact test, and ballistic test were performed to the prepared ...

Mechanical properties and ballistic behavior of LiF-added Al2O3–4 wt%Nb2O5 ceramics

open access: yesJournal of Materials Research and Technology, 2018
For the first time, the behavior of LiF-added alumina-niobia ceramics was quasi-static and dynamically analyzed in ballistic tests. Different compositions were investigated for the compound Al2O3–4 wt%Nb2O5–nLiF, with n ranging from 0 to 1.50 wt ...

Critical dynamics of ballistic and Brownian particles in a heterogeneous environment

open access: yes, 2007
The dynamic properties of a classical tracer particle in a random, disordered medium are investigated close to the localization transition. For Lorentz models obeying Newtonian and diffusive motion at the microscale, we have performed large-scale ...
