Abstract : The fundamentals are presented for a rational system of armor plate ballistic testing. The desirable properties of armor are first discussed. These are (1) high resistance to penetration, (2) freedom from back spalls, (3) freedom from cracking (shock failure).

Journal of the European Ceramic Society, 2009The testing methodology for transparent armour is described. The focus of this paper is on the assessment of the protective strength of transparent ceramics being used in transparent armour systems. Not only the ballistic testing method but also experimental techniques which allow the visualization of damage and the projectile penetration are discussed.
