Coexisting Rashba/Dresselhaus Spin Splitting in Solution‐Processed Bournonite Films Using Circular Photogalvanic Effect

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Circular photogalvanic effect measurements and first‐principles calculations reveal spin‐splitting states in solution‐processed bournonite films (CuPbSbS3) due to structural and bulk inversion asymmetry. The results provide experimental confirmation of coexisting Rashba and Dresselhaus spin‐splitting states in this non‐centrosymmetric chalcogenide ...

SOME FORENSIC ASPECTS OF BALLISTIC IMAGING [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Analysis of ballistics evidence (spent cartridge casings and bullets) has been a staple of forensic criminal investigation for almost a century. Computer-assisted databases of images of ballistics evidence have been used since the mid-1980s to help ...

Scalable Thermal Engineering via Femtosecond Laser‐Direct‐Written Phononic Nanostructures

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This study demonstrates that femtosecond laser‐induced periodic surface structures (fs‐LIPSS) can function as phononic metasurfaces, reducing thermal conductivity below the plain thin‐film limit. Phonon Monte Carlo analysis reveals that the periodic structures restrict phonon mean free paths.

Acoustic measurement of potato cannon velocity [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
This article describes measurement of potato cannon velocity with a digitized microphone signal. A microphone is attached to the potato cannon muzzle and a potato is fired at an aluminum target about 10 m away.

Quasi‐Static to Supersonic Energy Absorption of Nanoarchitected Tubulanes and Schwarzites

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Nanoarchitected energy‐absorptive Tubulanes exhibit record energy absorption under quasi‐static conditions and exceptional inelastic energy dissipation under 750 m s−1 ballistics impact, with high performance spanning strain rates of 12 orders of magnitude.

Permeability and Surface Hardness Surveying of Stone Damaged by Ballistic Impact

open access: yesHeritage, 2019
Recent instances of the destruction of cultural assets in conflict zones have demonstrated the need to develop methods which will allow for the assessment of damage to heritage stone in the field.

open access: yesRekayasa Mesin, 2021
Estimated damage levels from ballistics impact zone provide valuable information to make bulletproof materials more effective. Therefore, this study aims to determine the impact of ballistics including hole shape, hole depth, macro, and microstructure on

Nanolayer‐Encapsulated Stretchable Liquid‐Metal Sheets for Thermal Management

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A stretchable liquid metal sheet with both high thermal conductivity and mechanical flexibility is developed. Its trilayer structure, comprising copper‐particle‐dispersed gallium liquid metal encapsulated by styrene‐butadiene‐styrene nanosheets, shows 40.4 W m−1 K−1 conductivity, elongation exceeding 200%, and retention of 96% of its initial ...

Nanothermometry in Living Cells: Physical Limits, Conceptual and Material Challenges

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Heat and temperature are fundamental to life. When nanothermometers began probing regions as small as a living cell, they triggered controversial claims of large intracellular temperature gradients. We review physical constraints energy‐conservation, entropy production, thermodynamic fluctuations, and molecular dynamics.
