Brain state dynamics differ between eyes open and eyes closed rest

open access: yesHuman Brain Mapping, Volume 45, Issue 10, July 15, 2024.
We apply hidden Markov model to concurrently collected electroencephalography‐functional magnetic resonance imaging (EEG‐fMRI) resting‐state data, to investigate differences in brain states between eyes open (EO) and eyes closed (EC) resting states.

A review of machine learning techniques in photoplethysmography for the non-invasive cuff-less measurement of blood pressure [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
Hypertension or high blood pressure is a leading cause of death throughout the world and a critical factor for increasing the risk of serious diseases, including cardiovascular diseases such as stroke and heart failure.

EEG decoding with spatiotemporal convolutional neural network for visualization and closed‐loop control of sensorimotor activities: A simultaneous EEG‐fMRI study

open access: yesHuman Brain Mapping, Volume 45, Issue 9, June 15, 2024.
Data‐driven reconstruction of sensorimotor cortex activities. A spatiotemporal convolutional neural network model achieves the precise estimation of sensorimotor network activities from whole‐head scalp EEG signals. Abstract Closed‐loop neurofeedback training utilizes neural signals such as scalp electroencephalograms (EEG) to manipulate specific ...

Performance Comparison for Ballistocardiogram Peak Detection Methods

open access: yesIEEE Access, 2019
A number of research groups have proposed methods for ballistocardiogram (BCG) peak detection toward the identification of individual cardiac cycles. However, objective comparisons of these proposed methods are lacking.

Measurement of BOLD changes due to cued eye-closure and stopping during a continuous visuomotor task via model-based and model-free approaches [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
As a precursor for investigation of changes in neural activity underlying lapses of responsiveness, we set up a system to simultaneously record functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), eye-video, EOG, and continuous visuomotor response inside an ...

Embryonic heart rate is higher in species that experience greater nest predation risk during incubation

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 14, Issue 6, June 2024.
We investigated potential factors affecting embryonic heart rate (EHR), a proxy of development, in 14 wild songbird species in east‐central Illinois, USA. Within species we found that EHR was positively associated with embryonic age and egg temperature, while EHR among species were positively associated with nest predation risk.

Research on Improving the Accuracy of Wearable Heart Rate Measurement Based on a Six-Axis Sensing Device Integrating a Three-Axis Accelerometer and a Three-Axis Gyroscope

open access: yesApplied Sciences
This study proposes a novel heart rate estimation method that detects subtle cardiac-induced vibrations propagated through the cardiovascular system based on the ballistocardiography (BCG) principle, using a six-axis heart rate sensing device that ...
