Estimation of the respiratory rate from ballistocardiograms using the Hilbert transform

open access: yesBioMedical Engineering OnLine, 2022
Background Measuring the respiratory rate is usually associated with discomfort for the patient due to contact sensors or a high time demand for healthcare personnel manually counting it.

Motion limitations of non-contact photoplethysmography due to the optical and topological properties of skin [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Non-contact photoplethysmography (PPG) provides multiple benefits over in-contact methods, but is not as tolerant to motion due to the lack of mechanical coupling between the subject and sensor.

An Adaptive Feature Extraction Algorithm for Classification of Seismocardiographic Signals

open access: yes, 2018
This paper proposes a novel adaptive feature extraction algorithm for seismocardiographic (SCG) signals. The proposed algorithm divides the SCG signal into a number of bins, where the length of each bin is determined based on the signal change within ...

Low-cost fiber specklegram sensor for noncontact continuous patient monitoring [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Different low-cost approaches based on fiber specklegram sensors are employed to measure the physiological activity of patients lying in bed. This study is conducted over 20 volunteers to measure the movement and heart rate (HR) using two different ...

Large Area Ballistocardiography Enabled by Printed Piezoelectric Sensor Arrays on Elastomeric Substrates

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, Volume 9, Issue 17, September 4, 2024.
The utilization of thin and long piezoelectric sensors on compliant substrates allows for the remarkable enhancement of the effective transverse charge constant (d31). The approach is validated using the printable piezoelectric polymer, poly(vinylidene fluoride‐co‐trifluoroethylene) P(VDF‐TrFE).

Embryonic heart rate is higher in species that experience greater nest predation risk during incubation

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 14, Issue 6, June 2024.
We investigated potential factors affecting embryonic heart rate (EHR), a proxy of development, in 14 wild songbird species in east‐central Illinois, USA. Within species we found that EHR was positively associated with embryonic age and egg temperature, while EHR among species were positively associated with nest predation risk.

Heartbeat Rate Measurement from Facial Video [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Heartbeat Rate (HR) reveals a person’s health condition. This paper presents an effective system for measuring HR from facial videos acquired in a more realistic environment than the testing environment of current systems.
