Relationship between balsam fir sawfly density and defoliation in balsam fir

Forest Ecology and Management, 2005
Field studies were carried out to examine the relationships between balsam fir sawfly, Neodiprion abietis (Harris), density and resultant defoliation on young balsam fir, Abies balsamea (L.) Mill., in western Newfoundland. Densities of early- and lateinstar larvae explained 57 and 70% of variation in defoliation in a sleeve-cage study.

A Bluestain in Balsam Fir

Mycologia, 1961
The occurrence in North America of a bluestain in the heartwood of balsam fir (Abies balsamea (L.) Mill) has been recognized for over a quarter of a century, but attempts to identify the causal fungus have been unsuccessful because of failure to obtain the fruiting stage in culture (2, 3, 7).

Balsam Fir, Control of Balsam Twig Aphid, 1984

Insecticide and Acaricide Tests, 1985
Abstract A Christmas tree plantation in Dover, Maine was used for the insecticide evaluations. Insecticides were applied to 0.125 acre blocks on 11 May using a Stihl SG 17 mistblower at a rate of 5 gal finished spray/acre. Five trees were treated on 11 May with an additional treatment of Safer’s Insecticidal Soap (1:85) applied to runoff

Influence of pre-commercial thinning of balsam fir on defoliation by the balsam fir sawfly

Forest Ecology and Management, 2006
Pre-commercial thinning, whereby tree densities are reduced to diminish competition and maximize tree growth, is one of the most frequently used silvicultural practices in North America. We carried out field surveys in western Newfoundland and in eastern Nova Scotia, Canada, in pre-commercially thinned and unthinned stands of balsam fir (Abies balsamea

Balsam Fir, Control of Balsam Twig Aphid, 1985

Insecticide and Acaricide Tests, 1986
Abstract A Christmas tree plantation in Dover, Maine was used for the insecticide evaluations. Insecticides were applied to 0.125-acre blocks on 15 May using a Stihl SG 17 mistblower at a rate of 5 gal. finished spray/acre. Blocks treated with insecticides in 1985 had not been treated in 1984.
