Assessment of two minimally invasive methodologies for sex identification in the European eel, Anguilla anguilla

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract Sex is an important driver of variation in behaviour, ecology and physiology. Sex identification in the Critically Endangered European eel (Anguilla anguilla) currently requires fish sacrifice, or the use of morphological differences such as body length, which can be inaccurate in certain habitats and at intermediate body lengths.

The source‐to‐sea nexus between water and ocean law: An international and EU perspective

open access: yesReview of European, Comparative &International Environmental Law, EarlyView.
Abstract The source‐to‐sea (S2S) approach provides a systemic framework for analysing the governance of naturally interconnected freshwater and marine ecosystems. This paper examines the extent to which the S2S approach is reflected in key international and EU water and ocean law instruments, as well as the legal and governance implications of said ...

Prioritising research on endocrine disruption in the marine environment: a global perspective

open access: yesBiological Reviews, Volume 101, Issue 2, Page 848-868, April 2026.
ABSTRACT A healthy ocean is a crucial life support system that regulates the global climate, is a source of oxygen and supports major economic activities. A vast and understudied biodiversity from micro‐ to macro‐organisms is integral to ocean health.

Spatial capture–recapture reveals resource use and declining skipper numbers in Baltic Sea salmon trolling fisheries

open access: yesEcosphere, Volume 17, Issue 3, March 2026.
Abstract Many populations of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) native to the Baltic Sea are endangered. A significant group targeting salmon in this region is the recreational trolling fishery. Due to frequent changes in fisheries regulations and conditions, both salmon conservation and fishers are affected.

Links between biota and climate-related variables in the Baltic region using Lake Onega as an example** This work was supported by Biodiversity Bioresources Programmes grants from the Russian Academy of Sciences.

open access: yesOceanologia, 2014
This paper aims to reveal current changes (recent decades) in regional climatic variables like water temperature (WT), the duration of the ice-free period (ICE-FREE) and the precipitation rate (P), as exemplified by Petrozavodsk Bay (Lake Onega, European

A Conceptual Framework and Methods for Studying the Connectivity of Fishes

open access: yesFish and Fisheries, Volume 27, Issue 2, Page 342-369, March 2026.
ABSTRACT Connectivity is a multifaceted concept that has important implications for the management and conservation of marine and freshwater fishes. We developed a conceptual framework that encompasses multiple, interrelated categories of connectedness, including landscape (e.g., structural, functional) connectivity and ecological (e.g., trophic ...

Phylogeography and Contact Zones of the Common Grass Snake in Poland (Squamata: Natricidae: Natrix natrix)

open access: yesZoologica Scripta, Volume 55, Issue 2, Page 209-219, March 2026.
ABSTRACT Until now, the genetic identity of common grass snakes (Natrix natrix) in Poland remained poorly understood. This study presents the first comprehensive phylogeographic analysis for Poland using mitochondrial DNA sequences (cyt b and ND4 + tRNAs) and 13 nuclear microsatellite loci.

Cold period in the Northern Europe in the past (about 8200 years ago): analysis of empirical data and possible causes

open access: yesЛëд и снег, 2017
Cold episode in Northern Europe happened about 8200 years ago was known for a relatively long time, mainly due to paleobotanical (palynological) data obtained from analysis of lake and peat sediments.
