Crisis, temporality and governmental policy agendas: The cases of Finland and Sweden

open access: yesScandinavian Political Studies, EarlyView.
Abstract Crises transform the temporal orientation of political decision‐making. They demand immediate and decisive action and thus convert time into a means of political control. In these circumstances, assessing the long‐term consequences of proposed policies with respect to welfare, sustainability or justice also becomes demanding.

Loanwords and Linguistic Phylogenetics: *pelek̑u‐ ‘axe’ and *(H)a(i̯)g̑‐ ‘goat’1

open access: yesTransactions of the Philological Society, Volume 123, Issue 1, Page 116-136, March 2025.
Abstract This paper assesses the role of borrowings in two different approaches to linguistic phylogenetics: Traditional qualitative analyses of lexemes, and quantitative computational analysis of cognacy. It problematises the assumption that loanwords can be excluded altogether from datasets of lexical cognacy.

Transformation processes in the Oder Lagoon as seen from a model perspective [PDF]

open access: yesBiogeosciences
The Oder/Szczecin Lagoon is one of the largest Baltic Sea lagoons and is subject to very high nutrient loads from the Oder/Odra River. For our study, we employ a modified, high-resolution 3D ecosystem model specifically adapted for this shallow lagoon ...

A ‘Wholly Unjustifiable Treatment of British Subject’? The Detention of W. T. Goode in the Baltic, 1919

open access: yesHistory, EarlyView.
Abstract In the summer of 1919, W. T. Goode, the Manchester Guardian’s special correspondent in Russia and the Baltic, was arrested in the Estonian capital Tallinn and briefly detained aboard a British warship. Goode's detention caused a furore, leading to accusations of kidnap, heated commentary in the press and questions in parliament.

Functional validation of a white pupae minimal gene construct in Ceratitis capitata (Diptera: Tephritidae)

open access: yesInsect Science, EarlyView.
An intronless version of the white pupae (wp) gene was engineered to restore the wild type brown puparium color in white pupae phenotype mutants of the Mediterranean fruit fly, Ceratitis capitata. Functionality of the minimal gene version (mini‐wp) was verified in vivo, as one copy of mini‐wp successfully restored the wild type phenotype in homozygous ...

Trophic lengthening triggered by filamentous, N2‐fixing cyanobacteria disrupts pelagic but not benthic food webs in a large estuarine ecosystem

open access: yesEcology and Evolution
Eutrophication, increased temperatures and stratification can lead to massive, filamentous, N2‐fixing cyanobacterial (FNC) blooms in coastal ecosystems with largely unresolved consequences for the mass and energy supply in food webs.

Effects of Sea Ice on Baltic Sea Eutrophication

open access: yesMarine Pollution Bulletin
This study investigates the influence of sea ice on eutrophication in the Baltic Sea ecosystem by comparing simulations from 1953 to 2017, with ice and without ice cover. We assessed the impact from ice cover by using eutrophication indicators defined by the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD), the Dia/Dino index and the newly proposed Trophic ...

Between Sustainable Development, Financialisation and Sovereign Debt Crisis: The Case of Blue Finance as Yet Another Iteration of the Washington Consensus

ABSTRACT As far as international economic law (IEL) is concerned, the ‘Washington Consensus’ generally refers to the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF)'s development finance policies and tools. It covers their application to their clients and borrowers with the support of Western governments. This acceptation is of particular interest

Dense bottom gravity currents and their impact on pelagic methanotrophy at oxic/anoxic transition zones

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2016
We show that inflows of oxygenated waters into sulfidic layers have a strong impact on biogeochemical transformation at oxic/anoxic transition zones. Taking the pelagic methane dynamics in the Gotland Basin as an example, we performed our studies when ...
