Diversity, endemism and conservation status of native Mexican woody bamboos (Poaceae: Bambusoideae: Bambuseae)

open access: yesBotanical journal of the Linnean Society, 2019
Native Mexican woody bamboos (Poaceae: Bambusoideae: Bambuseae) are classified in subtribes Arthrostylidiinae, Chusqueinae and Guaduinae. They grow from sea level up to 3200 m along the main mountain ranges and occupy different vegetation types.

On the Origins of Toughness in Corymbia calophylla (Marri Tree) Nuts

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
We uncover the natural toughening mechanisms of the marri nut, including fiber pullout, crack deflection, and a viscoelastic matrix, which enable exceptional energy absorption and ductility comparable to Teflon, with an elastic modulus similar to acrylic.

The global distribution of bamboos: assessing correlates of introduction and invasion

open access: yesAoB Plants, 2016
Bamboos are one of the most economically important plant groups globally, but this world-wide trade creates risks of invasions. Here we identified 1662 species of bamboo, of which almost a seventh (232) have been introduced outside their native range ...

Ultrastrong TEMPO‐Oxidized Densified Bamboo via Interface Decoupling and Hierarchical Toughening

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study develops TEMPO‐oxidized densified bamboo that achieves ultrahigh strength and toughness by decoupling rigid hydrogen bonds into reversible van der Waals interactions. TEMPO oxidation reorganizes the cellulose hydrogen‐bonding network, facilitating energy dissipation via reversible interactions, thereby establishing a general strategy to ...
