Knowledge from non‐English‐language studies broadens contributions to conservation policy and helps to tackle bias in biodiversity data

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 62, Issue 9, Page 2148-2162, September 2025.
Collecting data from local sources markedly further strengthens global biodiversity databases by adding species not previously included in international datasets. Furthermore, the addition of these data helps to understand spatial and temporal biases that potentially influence abundance trends at both national and global levels.

Biases in Amphibian Sampling in the Amazon: Using Infrastructure and Accessibility Data to Identify Sampling Gaps

open access: yesBiotropica, Volume 57, Issue 5, September 2025.
Biogeographic knowledge of Amazonian amphibians is constrained by spatial and temporal coverage, leading to biases that affect the understanding of their diversity patterns. Using an extensive occurrence database, this study identified knowledge gaps and sampling biases linked to infrastructure and accessibility factors across the region.

Estimating abundance of aggregated populations with drones while accounting for multiple sources of errors: A case study on the mass nesting of Giant South American River Turtles

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 62, Issue 8, Page 2036-2047, August 2025.
The developed approach can be applied to several contexts to efficiently survey spatially aggregated populations using drone‐derived orthomosaics, and to understand phenology at these aggregation sites. We provide general recommendations for planning surveys and discuss implementations of our approach using other types of marking methods and model ...

Detection of canine external ear canal lesions using artificial intelligence

open access: yesVeterinary Dermatology, Volume 36, Issue 4, Page 424-432, August 2025.
Background – Early and accurate diagnosis of otitis externa is crucial for correct management yet often can be challenging. Artificial intelligence (AI) is a valuable diagnostic tool in human medicine. Currently, no such tool is available in veterinary dermatology/otology.

From Disturbance to Recovery: Unveiling the Role of Goats and Ecological Drivers on Vegetation Dynamics of Trindade Island, South Atlantic, Brazil

open access: yesJournal of Vegetation Science, Volume 36, Issue 3, May/June 2025.
We analyzed long‐term vegetation dynamics on Trindade Island, assessing the influence of feral goats and abiotic factors using remote sensing and field data. Vegetation cover increased over time, with forests and grasslands expanding. NDVI effectively captured these changes, revealing strong biotic and abiotic interactions.

Line‐item vetoes as a coordination mechanism

open access: yesLegislative Studies Quarterly, Volume 50, Issue 1, Page 38-53, February 2025.
Abstract Although presidential vetoes are central to the legislative process, the role of total versus line item vetoes (LIV) is largely unclear. While total vetoes are a sign of conflict between the branches, as the literature has emphasized, we argue that LIV function as a negative agenda setting mechanism that enables presidents to coordinate within
