Selected Pharmacological Studies of an Alkaloidal Extract of Banisteriopsis Quitensis

The preparation and pharmacological testing of an alkaloidal extract of Banisteriopsis quitensisare presented. The extract was found to exert numerous effects on the CNS in mice, including sedation, transient paralysis, ataxia, prolongation of hexobarbital “sleeping” times, and prevention of reserpine‐induced hypothermia.

Action of Alkaloidal Extract of Banisteriopsis quitensis on Rabbit Ileum

An alkaloidal extract of Banisteriopsis quitensis (Niedenzu) Morton was tested using a rabbit ileum preparation, and inhibition of contractions was noted in untreated strips as well as in those treated with most known stimulants of strip motility. This action was additive with the effect of agents that inhibit strip motility.

The Alkaloid of Banisteriopsis Inebrians Morton

The stems of Banisteriopsis inebrians were found to contain 0.15 per cent of the alkaloid harmine, but the other alkaloids that accomany harmine in peganum harmala could not be detected. The leaves were found to contain an alkaloid which was partly identified as harmine.
