On Risk, Leverage and Banks: Do Highly Leveraged Banks Take on Excessive Risk? [PDF]
This paper deals with the relation between excessive risk taking and capital structure in banks. Examining a quarterly dataset of U.S. banks between 1993 and 2010, we find that equity is valued higher when more risky portfolios are chosen when leverage is high, and that more risk taking has a negative impact on valuation of the debt of highly leveraged

Sovereign Risk and Bank Fragility [PDF]
We develop a model of bank risk-taking with strategic sovereign default risk. Domestic banks invest in real projects and purchase government bonds. While an increase in bond purchases crowds out profitable investments, it improves the government's incentives to repay and therefore lowers its borrowing costs.

Competition and Bank Risk: The Effect of Securitization and Bank Capital [PDF]
We find that the increased use of securitisation activity in the banking sector prior to the 2007-2009 crisis augmented the effect of competition on realised bank risk (i.e. more intense competition and greater use of securitisation is correlated with higher levels of realised risk) during the crisis.
