7. Bare nouns in Palenquero

2007
The present article argues that the traditional accounts of Palenquero's article system are fundamentally flawed. Schwegler's revisionist analysis is largely based on data he had collected in situ, but also relies on Moñino (in press), who similarly questions the traditional accounts of the Palenquero article system. Mo ñ ino and Schwegler have reached

Between bare nouns and demonstratives

Chinese Language and Discourse. An International and Interdisciplinary Journal
Abstract Identifiability, a universal semantic notion for referential interpretation, is realized differently across languages. While many languages encode identifiability via morphosyntactic definiteness (e.g., articles the and a/an in English), Mandarin lacks overt (in)definite articles and ...

Discourse Properties of Bare Noun Objects

2015
In this paper we investigate discourse transparency of ‘pseudo-incorporated’ nominals in Persian, that is, the possibility of being taken up by anaphoric expressions in subsequent discourse. Persian Incorporated Nominals (INs) at first sight seem to belong to the class of discourse opaque languages such as Hindi and Hungarian.

Specific classifiers versus unspecific bare nouns

Lingua, 2017
Abstract Based on rare language data from a Chinese minority language, we argue for a particular theory of specific and unspecific reference. We understand specific versus unspecific reference as the properties of picking out one versus not-one (set of) referents in the discourse context.

Analyzing Yorùbá Bare Nouns as DP

Lagos Notes and Records, 2009
This paper examines count nouns in Yorùbá and makes the claim that such nouns are bare (cf. Ajiboye 2005). Structurally, it proposes that the nouns are to be analyzed as Noun Phrases (NPs) that are contained inside a Determiner Phrase (DP) which is headed by a null Determiner (D). The claim is supported by both empirical and theoretical evidence.

Bare singular nouns in Middle Norwegian

This chapter discusses BSNs in the transitional period between these two language stages, Middle Norwegian. It is shown that although BSNs are not very frequent in Middle Norwegian, they do occur, especially with indefinite interpretation; their ...

Sovpadenie? Frame manipulation with bare nouns

Russian Linguistics, 2019
The paper deals with the use of bare nouns in a non-coordination-based context. In the first part, the communicational function of the bare noun construction is analysed as part of a more general use of bare nouns for labelling evoked semantic frames. The specific subset of bare nouns depends on one or more propositions in the left context and provides

Genericity, (In)Definiteness and Bare Nouns

2012
Chapter 7 assumes the current account of the generic reading of singular indefinites, relying on an LF representation in which a Q-adverb binds the variable supplied by the indefinite. This type of LF is argued to be illegitimate for plural and mass indefinites (due to a violation of an individuability constraint on quantification), which explains why ...
