Barium Radiology

The role of barium radiology in the diagnosis and assessment of inflammatory bowel disease is discussed. A primary diagnostic role is maintained in the small bowel, though in the colon endoscopy with biopsy is being used more frequently. The instant enema is safer in acute colitis.

A case of barium intravasation during routine barium enema is reported and 8 previously documented cases reviewed. This occurrence may be related to mucosal inflammation, intestinal obstruction, increased intraluminal pressure, or misplacement of the catheter tip.

Extrinsic Barium Collection on Barium Enema Examination

History A 53-year-old man was admitted with epigastric pain of five to six days' duration. Normal stools had become tarry. The patient had a history of surgery 11 years ago for perforated peptic ulcer. Barium enema examination revealed findings as on Fig 1 (preevacuation) and Fig 2 (postevacuation). Figure 3 is a preevacuation spot film.
