Environmental DNA Is Effective at Detecting a Salmonid Ectoparasite: A Statewide Survey of the Distribution and Genetic Diversity of the Gill Louse Salmincola californiensis in Colorado, USA

open access: yesEnvironmental DNA, Volume 7, Issue 5, September–October 2025.
A statewide survey of gill lice in the state of Colorado using environmental DNA and DNA barcoding approaches to assess spread and likely origin. Abstract includes pictures of gill lice, a map showing the sampling areas included in the study, and a workflow for assessing phylogenetic structure of the lice. ABSTRACT Invasive species present considerable

Brine shrimp lethality test as a biological model for preliminary selection of pediculicidal components from natural source

open access: yesBioscience Journal, 2013
Brine shrimp lethality test as a biological model for the preliminary selection of pediculicidal components from a natural source. In order to achieve a good correlation between pediculicidal activity and brine shrimp lethality (BSL) test, several ...

Some injurious scale insects. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Owing to the prevalence of a number of scale insects in various parts of the state, and as the majority of inquiries regarding insect pests which now reach the Experiment Station are concerning members of this group, a brief bulletin on them has been ...

A Novel Invertebrate Predator on an Oceanic Island: Impacts and Invasion Dynamics of Kontikia andersoni on Macquarie Island

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 15, Issue 7, July 2025.
This study examines the invasion dynamics of the predatory invertebrate flatworm Kontikia andersoni, and its impacts on the invertebrate communities of sub‐Antarctic Macquarie Island. Our findings indicate that at higher elevations where K. andersoni is present there are significant reductions in invertebrate richness.

Phylogenomics reveals the timescale of diversification in Amblycera

open access: yesSystematic Entomology, Volume 50, Issue 3, Page 540-553, July 2025.
Next‐generation sequencing changes the higher taxonomy of Amblycera (Insecta: Phthiraptera). Families Trimenoponidae and Gyropidae merge into Gyropidae; Trinotonidae is a separate family; several genera are paraphyletic. The ancestral host of Amblycera was likely a bird; Amblycera switched to mammals twice.

What a jerk!

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Philosophy, Volume 33, Issue 2, Page 458-474, June 2025.
Abstract I argue that “general pejoratives” such as “jerk” or “bastard” differ crucially from items such as “that damn N”. While items such as the latter typically serve to give vent to one's attitudes, general pejoratives essentially involve judgments about a person's behaviour or character.

Radiation of the bark louse genus Kilauella across the Hawaiian Islands [PDF]

open access: yes
Island systems serve as important models for studies of evolutionary processes and speciation. The Hawaiian Island group is one of the most isolated island chains in the world, and many groups of insects have undergone dramatic diversification within ...
