Optimal model‐based design of experiments for parameter precision: Supercritical extraction case

open access: yesThe Canadian Journal of Chemical Engineering, EarlyView.
Abstract This study investigates the process of chamomile oil extraction from flowers. A parameter‐distributed model consisting of a set of partial differential equations is used to describe the governing mass transfer phenomena in a cylindrical packed bed with solid chamomile particles under supercritical conditions using carbon dioxide as a solvent ...

Pharmacokinetic Evaluation of a Cinnamon Product on CYP2A6 Substrate Drugs: Application of a Novel Tool Involving the Nicotine Metabolite Ratio

open access: yesClinical Pharmacology &Therapeutics, EarlyView.
Cinnamon (Cinnamomum spp.) is used as a culinary spice and dietary supplement. A major constituent, cinnamaldehyde, was previously shown to inactivate cytochrome P450 (CYP) 2A6 in vitro. A mechanistic static model predicted an ~5‐fold increase in the AUC of the CYP2A6 substrates nicotine and letrozole.

Resilience Practices and Post‐Traumatic Growth Among Sudanese IDPs

open access: yesConflict Resolution Quarterly, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT In this paper we examine the resilience of internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Sudan who have endured various forms of suffering resulting from being targeted or trapped by militants involved in large‐scale violence. Upon escaping the conflict zones, the civilians exhibit strength, adaptability, and wisdom in the face of various threats to ...

Flight activity of the ambrosia beetles Trypodendron laaeve and Trypodendron lineatum in relation to temperature in southern Sweden [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
The aim of this study was to investigate the flight activity and abundance of the ambrosia beetle, Trypodendron lineatum Olivier 1795 (Col., Scolytinae) in southern Sweden after storm-fellings in Jan 2005 (Gudrun) and Jan 2007 (Per), that blew down 75 ...

Challenges and Enablers in Embedding SDGs Within Sustainability Reports

open access: yesCorporate Social Responsibility and Environmental Management, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This study explores how Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are integrated into sustainability reporting (SR), emphasizing the role of reporting in advancing transparency and sustainable development. Using a systematic literature review of 139 academic articles, the research identifies four thematic clusters: Communication, Determinant ...

The initiation, propagation, and effect of matrix microcracks in cross-ply and related laminates [PDF]

open access: yes
Recently, a variational mechanics approach was used to determine the thermoelastic stress state in cracked laminates. Described here is a generalization of the variational mechanics techniques to handle other cross-ply laminates, related laminates, and ...

The influence of tree age and microhabitat quality on the occurrence of crustose lichens associated with old oaks [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Questions: How do tree age, microhabitat characteristics and epiphytic competitors affect the occurrence of crustose lichens associated with old oaks? How do microhabitat characteristics and microclimate affect the cover of competitors (bryophytes and ...

Preservation biases in the fossil record distort species ecological niche and distribution models

open access: yesEcography, EarlyView.
Ecological niche models (ENMs) increasingly leverage the fossil record to understand species' environmental associations and predict their geographic distributions. However, fossils do not occur uniformly through time and space, which can compromise the robustness of ENMs and thus affect ecological conclusions. Here, we assessed how preservation biases
