The stellar dynamics of spiral arms in barred spiral galaxies [PDF]
Abstract A dynamical mechanism is proposed that explains the spiral structure observed frequently as a continuation of the bars in barred spiral galaxies. It is argued that the part of the spirals attached to the bar is due to chaotic orbits. These are chaotic orbits that exhibit for long time intervals a 4:1-resonance orbital behaviour.

DIFFUSION OF CHAOTIC ORBITS IN BARRED SPIRAL GALAXIES
International Journal of Bifurcation and Chaos, 2011We study the diffusion of chaotic orbits in an N-body model simulating a barred spiral galaxy. Chaotic orbits with initial conditions outside corotation support the spiral structure of the galaxy due to the phenomenon of stickiness close and along the unstable asymptotic manifolds of the unstable periodic orbits.

International Journal of Bifurcation and Chaos, 2012We review the dynamical mechanisms we have found to support the morphological features in barred-spiral galaxies based on chaotic motions of stars in their gravitational fields. The investigation of this phenomenon can be facilitated by an analysis of similar, but more peculiar, objects—barred spirals. A characteristic barred galaxy has a straight bar, which at the ends transforms abruptly into spiral arms.
