Deep Learning Segmentation of Spiral Arms and Bars [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2023
We present the first deep learning model for segmenting galactic spiral arms and bars. In a blinded assessment by expert astronomers, our predicted spiral arm masks are preferred over both current automated methods (99% of evaluations) and our original volunteer labels (79% of evaluations).

Euler–Heisenberg Black Hole Surrounded by Quintessence in the Background of Perfect Fluid Dark Matter: Thermodynamics, Shadows, and Quasinormal Modes

open access: yesFortschritte der Physik, Volume 73, Issue 3, March 2025.
Abstract Current observations show that a significant fraction of the Universe is composed of dark energy and dark matter. In this paper, the simultaneous effects of these dark sectors on the Euler–Heisenberg black hole are investigated, using the quintessence matter field and perfect fluid to model them. In particular, the black hole's thermodynamics,

Star Formation Properties in Barred Galaxies(SFB). III. Statistical Study of Bar-driven Secular Evolution using a sample of nearby barred spirals [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Stellar bars are important internal drivers of secular evolution in disk galaxies. Using a sample of nearby spiral galaxies with weak and strong bars, we explore the relationships between the star formation feature and stellar bars in galaxies. We find that galaxies with weak bars tend to be coincide with low concentrical star formation activity, while

CO in the Disk of the Barred Spiral Galaxy M83: CO (1-0), CO (2-1), and Neutral Gas

open access: yes, 2002
We present "on-the-fly" maps of CO (1–0) and CO (2–1) in the barred spiral galaxy M83. The entire optical disk is filled with CO emission in both lines, including interarm regions.

Hydrodynamical Simulations of the Barred Spiral Galaxy NGC 6782 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
NGC 6782 is an early-type barred spiral galaxy exhibiting a rich and complex morphology with multiple ring patterns. To provide a physical understanding of its structure and kinematical properties, two-dimensional hydrodynamical simulations have been ...

Composition, Mineralogy, and Noble Gas Content of Apollo 17 Particles and Soils From the 73002 Drive Tube

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Planets, Volume 130, Issue 3, March 2025.
Abstract As part of the Apollo Next‐Generation Sample Analysis (ANGSA) program, we provide bulk composition, mineralogy, petrology, and noble gas assays of lunar particles and soils from the top half of the 73001/2 double‐drive tube (i.e., 73002) studied by the ANGSA consortium.

What determines the sizes of bars in spiral galaxies? [PDF]

open access: yesMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 2019
ABSTRACT I use volume- and mass-limited subsamples and recently published data from the Spitzer Survey of Stellar Structure in Galaxies (S4G) to investigate how the size of bars depends on galaxy properties. The known correlation between bar semimajor axis a and galaxy stellar mass (or luminosity) is actually bimodal: for $\log \, (M_ ...

Bar Fraction in Early- and Late-type Spirals [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Bar fractions depend on the properties of the host galaxies, which are closely related to the formation and evolution of bars. However, observational studies do not provide consistent results. We investigate the bar fraction and its dependence on the properties of the host galaxies by using three bar classification methods: visual inspection, ellipse ...
