A Polar-Nulceus Dark Lane in the Barred Spiral M83: Three-Dimensional Accretion in the Nucleus

open access: yes, 1993
The central region of the barred spiral galaxy M83 reveals a polar-nucleus dust lane, wh ich extends from the NE molecular bar and crosses the central bulge. Its SW counterpart is not visible, being hidden behind the bulge.

Age distributions of star clusters in spiral and barred galaxies as a test for theories of spiral structure

open access: yes, 2010
We consider models of gas flow in spiral galaxies in which the spiral structure has been excited by various possible mechanisms: a global steady density wave, self-gravity of the stellar disc and an external tidal interaction, as well as the case of a ...

Conditions for Bar Formation in Bulgeless Disk Galaxies

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
While bars are commonly observed in disk galaxies, the precise conditions governing their formation remain incompletely understood. To investigate these conditions, we perform a suite of N -body simulations of bulgeless disk galaxies with stellar masses ...

Ring Star Formation Rates in Barred and Nonbarred Galaxies

open access: yes, 2010
Nonbarred ringed galaxies are relatively normal galaxies showing bright rings of star formation in spite of lacking a strong bar. This morphology is interesting because it is generally accepted that a typical ring forms when material collects near a ...
