Automated Detection of Galactic Rings from Sloan Digital Sky Survey Images

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
Morphological features in galaxies—like spiral arms, bars, rings, and tidal tails, etc.—carry information about their structure, origin, and evolution.

Tracing Coherent Gas Structures in the Central Region of the Starburst Galaxy NGC 253. II. Gas Excitation and Star Formation

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
Molecular gas in the central region of the starburst galaxy NGC 253 is complicated because of the combination of different gas kinematics, including stellar feedback, noncircular motions, and magnetic activity.

Dynamical models - The barred spiral galaxy NGC 1300

open access: yes, 1989
The results of hydrodynamical model calculations for the classic SBb(s) system NGC 1300 are presented and compared to high-resolution H I observations reported by England (1989).

An Imaging Survey of Early-Type Barred Galaxies

open access: yes, 2002
This paper presents the results of a high-resolution imaging survey, using both ground-based and Hubble Space Telescope images, of a complete sample of nearby barred S0--Sa galaxies in the field, with a particular emphasis on identifying and measuring ...

Thick disk and pseudobulge formation in a clump cluster

open access: yesEPJ Web of Conferences, 2012
Bulges in spiral galaxies have been supposed to be classified into two types: classical bulges or pseudobulges. Classical bulges are thought to form by galactic merger with bursty star formation, whereas pseudobulges are suggested to form by secular ...

Importance of Initial Condition on Bar Secular Evolution: Role of Halo Angular Momentum Distribution Discontinuity

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
The dark matter halo properties, for example, mass, spin, and concentration, play a significant role in the formation and evolution of bars in disk galaxies.

Bar-driven Transport of Molecular Gas in Spiral Galaxies: Observational Evidence [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 1999
The NRO-OVRO CO imaging survey showed that molecular gas was more concentrated to the central kiloparsec in barred spiral galaxies than in their unbarred counterparts. The result provided not only evidence for bar-driven gas transport but also estimates on the mean rate of gas transfer and lower limits to the lifetime of bars.

The Tully-Fisher Relation of Barred Galaxies

open access: yes, 2003
We present new data exploring the scaling relations, such as the Tully-Fisher relation (TFR), of bright barred and unbarred galaxies. A primary motivation for this study is to establish whether barredness correlates with, and is a consequence of, virial ...

ALMA-LEGUS. I. The Influence of Galaxy Morphology on Molecular Cloud Properties

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
We present a comparative study of the molecular gas in two galaxies from the Legacy ExtraGalactic UV Survey (LEGUS) sample: barred spiral NGC 1313 and flocculent spiral NGC 7793.

Model-based pattern speed estimates for 38 barred galaxies

open access: yes, 2008
We have modelled 38 barred galaxies by using near-IR and optical data from the Ohio State University Bright Spiral Galaxy Survey. We constructed the gravitational potentials of the galaxies from $H$-band photometry, assuming constant mass-to-light ratio.
