Six New Galactic Orbits of Globular Clusters in a Milky-Way-Like Galaxy [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
Absolute proper motions for six new globular clusters have recently been determined. This motivated us to obtain the Galactic orbits of these six clusters both in an axisymmetric Galactic potential and in a barred potential, such as the one of our Galaxy.

A New Statistical Analysis of the Morphology of Spiral Galaxies

open access: yesThe Astronomical Journal
Morphology is the starting point for understanding galaxies. Elmegreen et al. classified spiral galaxies into flocculent, multiple-arm, and grand-design galaxies based on the regularity of their spiral arm structure.

What determines the sizes of bars in spiral galaxies? [PDF]

open access: yesMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 2019
ABSTRACT I use volume- and mass-limited subsamples and recently published data from the Spitzer Survey of Stellar Structure in Galaxies (S4G) to investigate how the size of bars depends on galaxy properties. The known correlation between bar semimajor axis a and galaxy stellar mass (or luminosity) is actually bimodal: for $\log \, (M_ ...

Quantum GraviElectro Dynamics

open access: yesAnnalen der Physik, EarlyView.
The BRST invariant Lagrangian of the gravitationally interacting U(1)$U(1)$ gauge theory, namely the Quantum GraviElectro Dynamics (QGED). The Yan–Mills theory with the Hilbert–Einstein gravitational Lagrangian, namely the Yang–Mills–Utiyama (YMU) theory, is defined and quantised using the standard procedure. The theory is perturbatively renormalisable,

The TYPHOON Stellar Population Synthesis Survey. I. The Young Stellar Population of the Great Barred Spiral NGC 1365

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 2023
We analyze TYPHOON long-slit-absorption line spectra of the starburst barred spiral galaxy NGC 1365 obtained with the Progressive Integral Step Method covering an area of 15 kpc ^2 .

The HST/ACS Coma Cluster Survey. VIII. Barred Disk Galaxies In The Core Of The Coma Cluster [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
We use high-resolution (similar to 0.'' 1) F814W Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) images from the Hubble Space Telescope ACS Treasury survey of the Coma cluster at z similar to 0.02 to study bars in massive disk galaxies (S0s), as well as low-mass dwarf

Winter‐active spiders (Clubiona) have a hyperactive antifreeze protein with a unique beta‐solenoid fold

open access: yesThe FEBS Journal, EarlyView.
Antifreeze proteins from winter‐active spiders were purified using their affinity for ice. After LC–MSMS characterization, corresponding transcripts were identified. The antifreeze protein folds as a β‐solenoid with a large flat ice‐binding site on one surface and can bind to ice crystals and prevent their growth at −4 °C.

The Abundance and Properties of Barred Galaxies out to z ∼ 4 Using JWST CEERS Data

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
We present the first estimate of the observed fraction and properties of bars out to z  ∼ 4 using JWST CEERS NIRCam images. We analyze 1770 galaxies with M _⋆  > 10 ^10 M _⊙ at 0.5 ≤ z ≤ 4 and identify barred galaxies from 839 moderately inclined disk ...

Short-term dynamical evolution of grand-design spirals in barred galaxies

open access: yes, 2015
We investigate the short-term dynamical evolution of stellar grand-design spiral arms in barred spiral galaxies using a three-dimensional (3D) $N$-body/hydrodynamic simulation.

Epidemiology and Genetics of Rheumatic Diseases Suggest a Constant Rate of DNA Damage as Underlying Cause

open access: yesImmunology, EarlyView.
A constant rate of DNA damage that is not perfectly repaired will cause a constant rate of DNA mutations. The chance of mutation will increase if DNA is prone to damage, such as occurs in somatic hypermutation (SHM) hotspots and GC‐rich DNA. Thus, if one mutation‐prone DNA site drives disease, the age of onset of disease and degree of penetrance should
