Virginia Barrier Island Configuration: A Reappraisal
Science, 1982The 12 Virginia barrier islands are divided into three groups on the basis of historical retreat rates and characteristics. The growth and reversal of inlet offsets is a long-term event that results from the operation of known coastal processes. Both geomorphic evidence and wave refraction analyses indicate that shoreline irregularity will diminish ...

Empirical data fail to substantiate classical theories of barrier island formation from offshore bars. Specifically, the absence of open ocean beach and neritic sediments landward of barrier islands suggests that barriers have not developed from offshore bars.

Marine Geology, 1985
Abstract Barrier islands are part of a major coastal system composed of six interactive sedimentary environments. The six environments are also elements needed to impose the designation “barrier island” on littoral sand bodies. The elements are: (1) mainland; (2) backbarrier lagoon; (3) inlet and inlet deltas; (4) barrier island; (5) barrier platform;

Subsistence on the Main Island, Barrier Islands, and at Sea
2016This chapter shows how people use different ecosystems, specifically the main island and barrier island ecosystems of the study area with their independent geological histories, that are separated by a coral lagoon sea. This chapter addresses a variety of disciplines such as land use, shifting cycles, land tenure, soil nutrients, subsistence production,

The Little Barrier Island snipe
Notornis, 1988A single snipe was captured on Little Barrier Island in 1870. The history of this specimen is traced up to its designation as the holotype of Coenocorypha aucklandica barrierensis 85 years later. Other records of snipe in the Auckland area seem to refer to the one Little Barrier specimen or to other species of wader.

The Coastal Barrier Island Network (CBIN): Future management strategies for barrier islands
2010Barrier islands are ecosystems that border coastal shorelines and form a protective barrier between continental shorelines and the wave action originating offshore. In addition to forming and maintaining an array of coastal and estuarine habitats of ecological and economic importance, barrier island coastlines also include some of the greatest ...
