Distinct Microstructural Characteristic Lengths Defining Notch Fatigue Crack Initiation and Propagation, and Defect Tolerance in Advanced Steels

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Schematic representation of modes of microcrack nucleation, growth and temporary arrestment at different boundaries, with the criteria for crack propagation in three scenarios: (1) large notch, (2) defect/small sharp notch, and (3) long crack. This work revisits and integrates results on the fatigue behavior of advanced bainitic steels (in particular ...

BARRIER ISLAND GROUNDWATER

open access: yesCoastal Engineering Proceedings, 2018
Storms can have long-term impacts on the groundwater flows and subsurface salinity structure in coastal aquifers. Previous studies have shown that tides, wave driven infiltration, and storm surge elevate the groundwater level within the beach (Nielsen 1999, Cartwright 2004).

Rapid assessment of anemone and anemonefish populations at the Keppel Islands a report to the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
This project was commissioned by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority to address concerns that the abundance of anemonefishes and their host anemones at the Keppel Islands has declined significantly in recent years.

Microstructure Modification of Additively Manufactured Mo–9Si–8B by Annealing and Its Effects on High‐Temperature Mechanical Properties

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Postbuild annealing systematically modifies the phase fractions and morphology of EB‐PBF processed Mo–9Si–8B. Quantitative microstructure–property correlations reveal how controlled phase evolution enhances high‐temperature compressive strength and creep resistance.

Addressing the challenges of climate scenario-based impact studies in modelling groundwater recharge on small barrier islands at the German North Sea coast

open access: yesJournal of Hydrology: Regional Studies, 2023
Study Region: Barrier island at the German North Sea coast Study Focus: Drinking water supply on small barrier islands strongly depends on extractions from their freshwater lens below the island when no pipeline to the mainland exists.

Controlling Grain Growth in Powder Bed Fusion of Yttria‐Stabilized Zirconia Using Femtosecond Lasers: Challenges and Methodological Insights

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Binder‐free laser powder bed fusion of 8YSZ with a femtosecond laser is used to map process windows linking scan strategy, heat accumulation, and grain growth. Time‐resolved thermography and simulations reveal thermal regimes that enable continuous, vitrified, and fine‐grained 8YSZ surface layers without absorptive additives and demonstrate ...

Long-Term Contaminant Exposure Alters Functional Potential and Species Composition of Soil Bacterial Communities in Gulf Coast Prairies

open access: yesMicroorganisms
Environmental pollution is a persistent threat to coastal ecosystems worldwide, adversely affecting soil microbiota. Soil microbial communities perform critical functions in many coastal processes, yet they are increasingly subject to oil and heavy metal

Melanin's Role in Balancing Mechanical Strength and Reproductive Output in Environmentally Stressed Fungal Spores

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Melanin content directly controls fungal spore mechanical properties, with pigmented spores achieving rupture forces two orders of magnitude higher than hyaline spores. Environmental stress drives this quantity‐quality tradeoff; stressed species invest energy in melanin‐reinforced, mechanically superior thick‐walled, super‐hydrophobic spores, while ...

Architecture‐Driven Functional Coupling in Vertically Aligned Nanocomposites

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Vertically aligned nanocomposites define a growth‐engineered architecture in which vertical interfaces, strain fields, defect pathways, and phase connectivity are created simultaneously. This review shows how these architectural features couple ferroic, optical, ionic, electrochemical, and device responses, establishing design rules and open challenges

Tales of island tails: biogeomorphic development and management of barrier islands [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Coastal Conservation, 2016
The Frisian islands (Southern North Sea) have extensive island tails, i.e. the entire downdrift side of an island consisting of salt marshes, dunes, beaches and beach plains, and green beaches. Currently, large parts of these tails are ageing and losing dynamics, partly due to human influence.
