Breaking the barriers in membrane protein crystallography

The International Journal of Biochemistry & Cell Biology, 2013
As we appreciate the importance of stabilising membrane proteins, the barriers towards their structure determination are being broken down. This change in mindset comes hand-in-hand with more effort placed on developing methods focused at screening for membrane proteins which are naturally stable in detergent solution or improving those that are not so.

A Membrane-Mimetic barrier for islet encapsulation

Transplantation Proceedings, 2004
Enhanced control of both transport properties and surface physiochemical characteristics will be important steps in the development of an effective immunoisolation barrier critical to the success of pancreatic islet cell transplantation. We hypothesize that the cell membrane establishes an important paradigm for the design of a biomimetic ...

Membrane As the Barrier of Life

2018
“Dear Captain, have you explored all the planets of this small celestial system?” “Yes, my lord, we have. We found some signs of life on the third planet.” “Congratulations! Are THEY similar to us or other forms of life we already know?” “No, they are in a very primitive form and totally different from us, except for one thing ...

Cell Membranes as Barriers for Antisense Constructions

Antisense Research and Development, 1992
The results of studies on interaction of oligonucleotides and polynucleotides with cell membranes are reviewed. Oligonucleotides and polynucleotides bind to lipid membranes in the presence of divalent cations that may result in spontaneous encapsulation of nucleic acids and transfer of the formed vesicles to the other side of the membrane ...

Characterization of the Barrier Properties of Mucosal Membranes

Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences, 1990
The barrier properties of the nasal, rectal, and vaginal membranes were investigated in the rabbit by comparing physical characteristics and permeability to model hydrophilic and lipophilic compounds. It was found that the nasal, rectal, and vaginal mucosae differ in their physical characteristics and interactions.

BARRIER MEMBRANE TECHNIQUES IN ENDODONTIC MICROSURGERY

Dental Clinics of North America, 1997
The ultimate goal in endodontic microsurgery is the predictable regeneration of periapical tissues. One of the main concerns in treating an endodontically treated tooth which has a through-and-through osseous defect is that incomplete bone healing may be inevitable. This article reviews the use of different barrier membranes for bone regeneration.

The bacterial outer membrane as a drug barrier

Trends in Microbiology, 1997
The outer membranes of Gram-negative bacteria constitute a semi-permeable barrier, as indicated by the corresponding alterations in outer membrane permeability and in antibiotic susceptibility resulting from mutation or polycation action. Restricted outer membrane permeability works in synergy with co-determinant resistance mechanisms, such as the ...

Periosteum as a Barrier Membrane

Journal of Oral Implantology
The periosteum is a dense connective tissue that envelopes bones It plays an important role in bone regeneration due to its rich cellular composition and vascularity. The periosteum is an autogenous tissue that contains osteoprogenitor cells, which can support osseous regeneration.

Nanofibrous membrane as a moisture barrier

AIP Conference Proceedings, 2018
The text of the paper deals with the unusual use of textile membrane, originally used in outdoor clothing, as hydrobariers in building composites. In the experiment, the resistance of the building composite exposed to the 1.5 m high water column is examined. Research is conducted on two levels.
