Penalty and barrier methods are procedures for approximating constrained optimization problems by unconstrained problems. The approximation is accomplished in the case of penalty methods by adding to the objective function a term that prescribes a high cost for violation of the constraints, and in the case of barrier methods by adding a term that ...

Method for Calculating Internal Rotation Barriers
The Journal of Chemical Physics, 1965A method is proposed for calculating internal rotation barriers in ethanelike molecules based on two effects, exchange interactions of the electrons in bonds adjacent to the bond about which internal rotation occurs and nonbonded or van der Waals interactions.

Barrier methods for equilibrium problems
2017We consider several versions of the barrier method for a general equilibrium problem with nonlinear constraints in a reflexive Banach space setting. We suggest weak coercivity conditions instead of (generalized) monotonicity, including one containing a perturbed barrier function, in order to entail solutions for the equilibrium problem.

Methods for overcoming interspecific crossing barriers
1997Summary Crossing barriers occur frequently when intra- or interspecific crosses are attempted. These barriers are the result of incompatibility and incongruity. Sexual barriers preventing interspecific hybridization have been distinguished into pre- and postfertilization barriers.

Barrier Methods of Contraception: A Reappraisal
International Journal of Gynecology & Obstetrics, 1979In the last two years, there has been a gradual reawakening of interest in barrier methods and an increase in their usage by both men and women. This is in large part due to concern about the sometimes serious side effects reported for other contraceptive methods.

Barrier Functions in Interior Point Methods
Mathematics of Operations Research, 1996We show that the universal barrier function of a convex cone introduced by Nesterov and Nemirovskii is the logarithm of the characteristic function of the cone. This interpretation demonstrates the invariance of the universal barrier under the automorphism group of the underlying cone.

Penalties and barriers feature prominently in two areas of modern optimization theory. First, both devices are employed to solve constrained optimization problems [96, 183, 226]. The general idea is to replace hard constraints by penalties or barriers and then exploit the well-oiled machinery for solving unconstrained problems.

The logarithmic barrier method
1994In this chapter we analyze the complexity of special variants of the logarithmic barrier method for some classes of problems. We will deal with so-called long-, medium-and short-step methods. First, we will give a general framework for the logarithmic barrier method.

Penalty Methods, Barrier Methods and Augmented Lagrangians
1998Abstract We now turn to study some general optimization methods upon which we can later base the design of model decomposition algorithms (see Chapter 1). These general methods for constrained nonlinear optimization are the penalty methods that employ penalty or barrier functions giving rise to so-called exterior penalty methods or ...
