Patla at Ajalpan: A Barter System in the Tehuacán Valley of Mexico

In the patla, or barter, section of the periodic market at San Juan Ajalpan, in the Tehuacan Valley of Mexico, farmers exchange valley-grown maize and vegetables for fruits and other hill products. Although negotiated barter is common, most exchanges are of fixed quantities of dry shelled maize for hill fruits of relatively uniform size.
