Restricted hyperplane sections of the cross‐polytope and the simplex

open access: yesJournal of the London Mathematical Society, Volume 114, Issue 4, October 2026.
Abstract We give a new proof of Webb's theorem on maximal central hyperplane sections of the regular n$n$‐simplex Δn$\Delta _n$, viewed in its standard embedding in Rn+1$\mathbb {R}^{n+1}$. A similar method also yields sharp maximal estimates for noncentral sections of Δn$\Delta ^n$ whose distance d$d$ from the barycenter is small, namely d<1(n+1)(2n+1)
