Laboratory diagnosis of Bartonella infections

Clinics in Laboratory Medicine, 2002
Bartonella species are pathogens of emerging and reemerging significance, causing a wide array of clinical syndromes. In North America and Europe, they are increasingly recognized as a cause of culture negative endocarditis, neuroretinitis, and disease among homeless, HIV-infected, and other immunosuppressed individuals. In South America, bartonellosis

Bartonella Infections: Diverse and Elusive

Hospital Practice, 1998
Children with young cats, HIV-infected patients with low CD4 counts, and lice-infested homeless people are among those with an increased risk. Clinical presentation varies with the infecting Bartonella species and the host. Treatment for cat-scratch disease is supportive; macrolide therapy is an appropriate choice for other Bartonella infections.

Bartonella bacilliformis infection

2010
Bartonellosis (Carrión´s disease, verruga Peruana, Oroya fever, Guaitará fever) is caused by the Gram-negative bacillus Bartonella bacilliformis. It is endemic in the western Andes and inter-Andean valleys of Peru, and is still occasionally reported in Ecuador, with infection resulting from the bite of various female sandflies....

[Bartonella infection].

Revista medico-chirurgicala a Societatii de Medici si Naturalisti din Iasi, 2002
Bartonella species have been recently recognized as an important human pathogen associated with a wide spectrum of diseases. Four members of the genus are known to cause human infection: Bartonella baciliformis, B. henselae, B. quintana and B. elizabethae. B.

Cell entry and the pathogenesis of Bartonella infections

Trends in Microbiology, 1996
Erythrocyte parasitism, or hemotrophy, is not a common strategy for bacteria. However, Bartonella species are elegantly adapted to parasitize a variety of cell types including red blood cells. Bartonella bacilliformis, a useful model organism for the genus, has been used to study virulence determinants involved in colonization, attachment and invasion ...

Bartonella infections and HIV disease

Journal of the Association of Nurses in AIDS Care, 1996
Successful assessment and treatment of Bartonella in HIV-seropositive people depends on nursing's fundamental role in the management of these bacterial infections. Bartonella species are responsible for a variety of infections, including cat scratch disease and bacillary angiomatosis, which can be debilitating to people living with AIDS.

RENAL MICROABSCESSES DUE TO BARTONELLA INFECTION

Pediatric Infectious Disease Journal, 2010
We report a case of cat scratch disease with bilateral renal microabscesses. This case is unique in that there were no other abscesses found intrabdominally. A previously healthy child was admitted with a 12-day history of fever and headaches. Bartonella henselae titers were initially IgG 1:640 and IgM 1:100, and later IgG >1:2560 and IgM >1:800.

Neurological presentations of Bartonella henselae infection

Neurological Sciences, 2018
Neurological symptoms in patients with cat-scratch disease (CSD) have been rarely reported. The aim of this study is to analyze the frequency of neurological CSD (NCSD) and describe the disease clinical presentation, management and outcome. We retrospectively selected patients with a CSD syndrome and Bartonella IgG titers > 1:256.

Experimental infection of dogs with Bartonella henselae and Bartonella vinsonii subsp. berkhoffii

Veterinary Immunology and Immunopathology, 2013
The lack of a suitable infection model remains an important obstacle for the pathophysiological understanding of Bartonella spp. The following pilot study was designed to determine whether cell culture-grown Bartonella henselae SA2 and Bartonella vinsonii subsp. berkhoffii genotype III would cause persistent bacteremia in dogs.

Rickettsial Infections, Bartonella Infections, and Coxiellosis

2016
About 20 years ago, various diseases caused by bacteria Rickettsia, Orientia, Ehrlichia, Anaplasma, Coxiella, and Bartonella were all denominated as rickettsial infections. Nowadays, based on genetic analysis, these bacteria are reorganized and considered as distinct entities. The order Rickettsiales includes at the moment two families: Anaplasmataceae
