Shifting environmental baselines in the Red Sea
Marine Pollution Bulletin, 2014The Red Sea is among the world's top marine biodiversity hotspots. We re-examined coastal ecosystems at sites surveyed during the 1980s using the same methodology. Coral cover increased significantly towards the north, mirroring the reverse pattern for mangroves and other sedimentary ecosystems.

Genetic baseline for conservation and management of sea trout in the northern Baltic Sea
Conservation Genetics, 2015The genetic structure of nine wild, seven hatchery-reared, and one presumably mixed, sea trout (Salmo trutta L.) populations sampled from watersheds along the Swedish Baltic Sea coast was analysed using ten microsatellite loci. DNA-information was evaluated as a baseline for mixed stock analysis (MSA) and individual assignment (IA).

Environmental Baseline Research in the Canadian Beaufort Sea
SPE Arctic and Extreme Environments Conference and Exhibition, 2011Abstract It is generally understood that hydrocarbon exploration in the circumpolar Arctic will increase in the coming years to meet growing global energy demands. Concurrent with consumer demand is an equally important obligation to demonstrate adequate environmental understanding and risk-based operations planning prior to conducting ...

Metals in molluscs and algae: A north–south Tyrrhenian Sea baseline
Journal of Hazardous Materials, 2010We develop a 800 km long relative baseline of metal pollution for the Tyrrhenian Sea, from the north of Naples to south of Sicily (Italy), based on spatio-temporal (1997-2004) concentrations of trace metals in marine organisms and on the bioaccumulative properties of those organisms.

Baselines in the Modern Law of the Sea
2014In several different capacities, Satya N. Nandan has made most valuable contributions to the modernisation of the law of the sea. This chapter offers some observations on the rules of law relating to baselines. Many of these rules were discussed in the Second Committee's working group on baselines, to which Satya Nandan and the author both belonged ...

Baseline Studies and Risk Analyses in the Baltic Sea
International Oil Spill Conference Proceedings, 1991ABSTRACT In 1986 an oil and gas concession in the Baltic Sea was granted by the Danish Ministry of Energy to a group of oil companies, with Norsk Hydro as operator. A paper describing the goals achieved midway through the program was presented at the 1989 Oil Spill Conference in San Antonio, Texas.

Iceland’s Territorial Sea Baselines, Volcanic Eruptions and Sea Level Rise
The Yearbook of Polar Law OnlineAbstract Volcanic eruptions can have various consequences, including in the field of the international law of the sea. This article addresses the impact that two volcanic eruptions had on the baselines for measuring the breadth of Iceland’s territorial sea. First, the impact of the eruption in 1918 in Katla was addressed by the Supreme Court of Iceland

Redrawing the Territorial Sea Baseline in the Firth if Clyde
International and Comparative Law Quarterly, 2002At first sight, the Territorial Sea (Amendment) Order 19981 is an unremarkable instrument. Its explanatory note states that it amends the Schedule to the Territorial Waters Order in Council 19642 ‘by adding a new baseline between the Mull of Kintyre and Laggan, as well as by making minor changes to [three points scheduled in the 1964 Order] which ...

Defining the ‘boundary’ between land and sea: territorial sea baselines in the South China Sea
2014Baselines along the coast define the land/sea interface. Ascertaining the location of this ' boundary' between land and sea has crucial implications with respect to maritime jurisdiction. This is the case because while the longstanding legal maxim that ' the land dominates the sea' prevails, it has also been observed that ' it dominates it by the ...
