On Negative Bases

2009
We study expansions in non-integer negative base ? β introduced by Ito and Sadahiro [7]. Using countable automata associated with ( ? β)-expansions, we characterize the case where the ( ? β)-shift is a system of finite type. We prove that, if β is a Pisot number, then the ( ? β)-shift is a sofic system.

Bases and their Limitations

The next chapters will deal with generalizations of the basis concept, so it is natural to ask why they are needed. Bases exist in all separable Hilbert spaces and in practically all Banach spaces of interest, so why do we have to search for generalizations?
